The St. Edmond girls had no trouble passing the first postseason test of the season, dominating Collins-Maxwell here Thursday night, 68-18.
With the win, the Gaels (16-5 overall) advance to a Class 1A, Region 2 quarterfinal vs. Baxter (16-6) back here on Tuesday night. Tip is set for 7 p.m.
The Bolts advanced with a 61-30 triumph over Colo-Nesco.
Eden Horn scored 16 points with 15 rebounds, seven blocked shots and three steals to lead St. Edmond, as Chloe Palmer added 15 points with nine assists, seven rebounds and four steals.
“We really came out and were effective on both ends of the floor,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “I thought we played solid defense and made the extra pass several times to give ourselves an open look the basket.
“We know the competition is only going to get tougher from here on out, but I was proud of the girls and happy to see them have a performance like this.”
The Gaels scored the first 11 points of the contest, leading by as many as 23 before the horn sounded on the first quarter. The lead continued to grow from there, as Sophia Schlienz drained three 3-pointers in the second, finishing with 11 points.
Anna Lursen, the lone senior starter for St. Edmond, chipped in six points with five steals, three rebounds and a blocked shot. Classmate Maggie Flaherty was first off the bench, adding six points — all in the opening quarter.
“We had balance scoring and really were effective at the basket,” Tracy said. “We know there are still things we can clean up, but these girls are determined to continue to get better.
“The really fun thing about them is they don’t care who has how many points because they are just focused on winning.”
In the third quarter, Horn scored 12 of the 18 points scored by St. Edmond, going 5-for-6 from the field. The freshman finished 7 of 11 shooting, as the five Gael starters went a combined 22-for-44 and made five triples.
For Collins-Maxwell (1-19), Ava Pasquariello had six points and Ellie McDonough added four.
The top-half of the region features top-ranked Bishop Garrigan (19-2), as the Golden Bears play West Bend-Mallard (9-13) next. The Wolverines advanced with a 58-38 victory last night.
