Gael girls run into a buzzsaw
ALGONA — The St. Edmond girls ran into a red-hot Bishop Garrigan here Friday night.
The top-ranked (Class 1A) Golden Bears scored the first 10 points of the game on their way to a 59-18 victory and spot in a regional championship.
Bishop Garrigan (21-2 overall) will face Lake Mills (17-5) on Wednesday in Mason City. During the regular season, the Golden Bears won both games vs the Bulldogs.
For the Gaels (17-6), the season comes to an end, along with the careers of seniors Anna Lursen, Maggie Flaherty, Ava Underberg and Ava Andrew.
“Those four seniors were freshmen during our long losing streak, so they have helped build this program to where it is today,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “They have a meant a lot to us coaches and it was great to see them finish with one of the more successful seasons in school history.”
After going up 20-5 following the first, the Golden Bears did not let off the gas, outscoring St. Edmond in the second, 20-0.
Bishop Garrigan has now won each of the last eight meetings between the two, including twice this year.
Chloe Palmer had six points for the Gaels, Eden Horn and Abby Huss each added five, and Underberg had two.
“That is a very good Bishop Garrigan team,” Tracy said. “But I felt like this game was not a true indication of what our girls are capable of.
“We had a great season and despite this loss, they have nothing to hang their heads about.”
St. Edmond had six losses to three teams this season, including two games to Bishop Garrigan. The other four losses were in North Central Conference play to 3A programs Algona and Clear Lake.
Graclyn Eastman scored a game-high 18 points for the Golden Bears, with Sacha Alesch adding 15. Madelyn Tigges chipped in with eight.
