Fort Dodge girls ousted in regional opener

Maehl becomes program’s all-time leading rebounder in final game

HUXLEY — The season came to an end for the Fort Dodge girls here on Wednesday night, and with it, the high school career of LJ Maehl.

The Dodgers were eliminated from Class 4A regional play by Ballard, 57-27, as the Bombers advance to the Region 2 semifinals to take on Pella Saturday night.

Maehl, the 5-on-5 all-time leading scorer in Fort Dodge history, finished with a team-high 13 points. She ends her career with 1,330 points scored and surpassed the career rebound record on Wednesday, which was also previously held by Molly Nelson.

“You couldn’t ask for more from LJ,” FDSH head coach Scott Messerly said. “She was always a great teammate, always upbeat, and this year, she battled double and triple teams every single game.

“I watched her grow as a player and as a student-athlete over these past four years, and they don’t get better than her. The team and I will miss her, but I know the sky is the limit for LJ and I am so proud of her.”

Brooklyn Gilliland, a freshman, added five points, Ellie Doster had three and Bella Lee, Addie Lentsch and Adele Seltz each chipped in two for the Dodgers (7-15 overall).

Ballard (9-13) never trailed, as they have won four in a row now heading into the matchup with Pella (12-9). Alea Kinzenbaw, a freshman, came off the bench to score 13, as Kaitlyn Dunn, another freshman, added 10.

After holding Fort Dodge to just two free throws in the first quarter, Ballard opened a 23-11 lead at the break by scoring the final seven points of the second quarter. They were then ahead by 23 entering the fourth.

“We had too many turnovers,” Messerly said. “That put us behind early, and Ballard really shot the ball well. They made a lot of threes, which they haven’t done a ton this year.”

Maehl is the lone senior on the roster for the Dodgers. She also ranks in the Top-10 in assists and steals in FDSH history.
