Fort Dodge boys compete in IAC bowling tourney
WATERLOO — The Fort Dodge boys bowling team participated in the Iowa Alliance Conference Meet on Monday.
The Dodgers placed seventh with a score of 2,762. Marshalltown (3,230) was the winner, followed by Des Moines Lincoln (3,222), and Des Moines East (3,209).
“Our team total of 2762 was our best total of the season by 30 pins,” said FDSH head coach Julie Ulrich. “I was proud of the guys and their efforts.
“They were fired up and all six boys contributed to our total pins in some way.”
With a group of six seniors, the Dodgers had four series totals over 500. The third individual game accounted for scoring in the individual race.
“We averaged 189 over our five baker’s games,” Ulrich said. “It would be awesome if the boys could maintain that average or higher over the 15 games they’ll shoot next Monday at districts to give themselves a chance to qualify.”
Kody VanValkenburg paced the Dodgers with a 583. VanValkenburg had games of 175, 201, and 207.
Leland Sassman was next in line with a 581 for FDSH. He had games of 222, 165, and 194.
Slade Babb (218-156-153–527), Orrin Rurup (190-145-179–514), Blake Seeman (165-181-148–494) and Lium Powers (159-143-191–493) rounded out the lineup.
“Kody and Leland both had good individual series,” Ulrich said. “They each had one game that I know they wish they could’ve added another 40 pins to.
“Slade started off with a great game and then really struggled with splits after that. He came back and bowled very well in bakers for us marking 90 percent of his frames. Blake Seeman anchored for us the final three games, throwing eight strikes and marking 92 percent of his frames. All the boys did pretty well in bakers. Lium Powers and Orrin Rurup marked 80 percent and 75 percent.”
The Dodgers will compete in a state-qualifying meet on Monday beginning at 10 a.m. in Le Mars.
