FD’s Graves, Ellis compete at girls state bowling meet

WATERLOO — Senior Calli Graves and freshman Ara Ellis wrapped up their seasons here Wednesday by competing in the Class 2A state bowling championships from Cadillac XBC.

Graves fired a three-game total of 558 to take 20th overall. Ellis was 32nd with a 476.

“Honestly, it was a good day for us,” FDSH head coach Nick Vinson said. “It was just a really, really good day of bowling overall. Those scores from the field were ridiculous.

“Some years, Calli would have made the bracket (Top-8) with a 558, but this was just a really strong day.”

Graves had game scores of 196, 178 and 184, finishing two pins ahead of Decorah’s Rylee Averhoff to secure her Top-20 finish.

“Calli bowled well,” Vinson said. “I think she definitely had more nerves early on than she expected, but she did a really nice job. She had her second-highest total and just really bowled well.”

Ellis, one of two freshmen in the field along with Quinley Clark from Le Mars, had game scores of 146, 151 and 179.

“Getting that state experience is going to be so important for Ara moving forward,” Vinson said. “She threw a great first ball, but just left some single pins that kept her score down.

“We talked and I told her there were 192 bowlers at the district meet and just 32 make it to state. So no matter if you finish first or last, there are 160 kids at home who would trade spots with you.”

Both Dodger bowlers surpassed their season-high coming in, as Graves had rolled a 414 and Ellis a 358.

Emily Whitehead of Clinton won the state title in bracket play after entering as the No. 5 seed.

Starting at $4.94/week.
