Dodgers are IAC champions
OTTUMWA — The Fort Dodge wrestling team is finding its stride at the perfect time.
The Dodgers claimed the Iowa Alliance Conference championship on Saturday, capturing five individual championships.
“Overall we performed well and that’s huge going into the regional dual, districts and state,” said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. “We just have to continue to carry that momentum and build as we progress into the postseason.”
Top-ranked (IAwrestle) senior Dreshaun Ross came away with his fourth league championship.
Fourth-ranked Knox Ayala (106), sixth-ranked Damien Yeoman (113), sixth-ranked Trace Rial (120), and ninth-ranked Rylee Brown (165) joined the Oklahoma State recruit in the winner’s circle.
The Dodgers had a near perfect placement round winning 10 of 11 wrestled matches and 12 Dodgers earned a medal.
The Dodgers accumulated 199 points. Marshalltown (176.5) was the runner up, followed by Ottumwa (160), Mason City (140) and Waterloo East (130.5).
“The money round is a very important round and we were 10-1 in matches wrestled (without medical forfeit),” Thompson said. “That was a big round for us. We were down by 20 going into that last round.”
Fort Dodge has won four straight IAC championships since its inception in the 2022-23 school year.
Ross has now won 131 consecutive matches and is 140-2 in his career. He is one win behind his older brother Damarion Ross for ninth on the all-time win list.
Ross had a 21-6 technical fall in his opener and a fall in 1:17 of the championship match.
The No. 1 ranked heavyweight in the nation is second in school history with a .992 win percentage, behind only four-time state champion Brody Teske (.994).
Rial, Yeoman, and Rial all won their second league titles and Ayala opened his career with his first.
Rial (26-7) started with a tech fall and a fall before beating Julian Davilla of Des Moines East, 12-3 in the title round.
Yeoman (24-10) won by fall in the semifinals and earned a 16-1 tech fall in 4:07 over Nicholas Million of Marshalltown to win the crown.
Brown’s (25-7) title came on the back of a fall in 1:31 and a 20-4 tech fall in four minutes over Marshalltown’s Carson Wright.
Ayala (28-5) had a 21-2 tech fall in his opener before closing out with a fall in 1:59 over Braedlyn Brown of Ames.
The Dodgers went 3-4 in third place matches as senior Hunter Kasperbauer (126), classmate Caiden Fraher (157) and junior Jayce Skow (175) all finished with third place finishes. Cael Adams (215) placed fourth
Angel Sandoval (138) and Amari McCaleb (150) placed fifth. Senior Sam Davidson (132) medical forfeited to the sixth place spot.
“Our ranked guys had great days coming away with championships,” Thompson said. “We had some guys that had strong days on the back side like Hunter getting third and Cael finishing fourth.”
The Dodgers were without seventh-ranked 190 pound senior Jesse Egli, who is out with an injury.
The Dodgers are back in action on Tuesday when they travel to Indianola to face Johnston in a Class 3A regional dual.
Action will begin at 6 p.m. with the winner to face Indianola.
