Diedrick places third for Humboldt
CORALVILLE — Humboldt’s Danica Diedrick went into the girls state wrestling tournament with the mindset of earning a podium spot, and she did exactly that.
Now the Humboldt junior has a building block heading into her final season as a Wildcat.
Diedrick has already cemented her legacy as a three-time state qualifier, and now a third-place medal to show for it after Friday’s performance. She has accumulated a three-year record of 112-31 and headed into her senior campaign with a junior record of 38-4.
“It means a lot to me that I am on the podium this year, especially that it is as high as third,” Diedrick said. “I can build on this by using my only loss in the semifinals as fuel this offseason.
“Next year, my goal is to be in the finals, so I have something for motivation.”
Diedrick won two matches by fall to set up her 170-pound semifinal on Friday. The No. 4 seed faced top-seed Briscia Garcia-Vasquez of Liberty.
Diedrick dropped a 5-1 decision.
The Humboldt junior set herself up for the bronze with a fall in 3:56 over Izzy Taylor (33-11) of Anamosa. She clinched her podium spot with a fall in 4:39 over Clear Lake’s Kayma Burleson (43-9).
Humboldt junior Laina Dettmann (35-10) won one match at 120 pounds.
“She (Diedrick) had a goal to get on the podium and she got that done,” said Humboldt head coach Andy Newell. “Now her goal is to finish next year as a champion.
“She will work hard to make that happen. She is driven, and hungry to reach her goals.”
South Central Calhoun’s seventh-seed Emery Kramer came away with a seventh place finish.
Kramer (42-15) lost her 110 pound third round consolation match to Amya Bass (42-6) of Davenport Assumption by fall in 1:58.
She earned her medal with a fall in 42 seconds over Kiersten McRoberts (33-10) of Osage.
Emmetsburg’s fifth-seeded freshman Payton Haack (46-8) made a big impact in her first season on the mat at 145 pounds, finishing fourth.
Haack won her first two matches, pinning Kelly Throndson of New Hampton/Turkey Valley in 3:10 and then Kenzie Maeder (51-5) of Southwest Valley in 1:18.
The E-Hawk freshman lost by fall in 2:18 to Sophie Miller (29-5) of Mid-Prairie.
