Cowboys, Bulldogs both clinch state dual berths

CLARION — The second-ranked (Class 2A) Clarion-Goldfield/Dows wrestling team punched a ticket to the upcoming state dual tournament with a resounding 70-9 victory over No. 20 Humboldt here Tuesday night.

The Cowboys won all but two matches, as the Wildcats opted to forfeit at four weights. State duals are scheduled for Saturday from the Xtream Arena in Coralville.

Cole Wibholm, Estuardo Lopez, Paxton Redenius, Adrian Phetxoumphone, Linden Phetxoumphone, Ryan Hartwig, Reed Campbell, Dawson Beyer, Colin Sesker, Ryland Morgan and Easton Beyer reeled off 11 consecutive wins before Broedy Hendricks of Humboldt claimed a technical fall at 190 pounds.

Ayden Fiengo gave the Wildcats a second victory, but JT Kelso finished things off with a forfeit for Clarion-Goldfield/Dows.

The Wildcats advanced to the regional final with a 37-32 victory over No. 19 Denver in the opener. Spencer Scranton, Karson Reinhardt, Jaxson Kirchhoff, Braden Downs, Tate Halverson and Hendricks were all winners.

Scranton, Kirchhoff and Halverson scored falls. Downs won by technical fall, and both Reinhardt and Hendricks prevailed by major decision.

Hendricks moved up to 215 and topped Cody Koepke.

The Cowboys finished third at state duals last year, earning a win over Williamsburg in the consolation final after falling to West Delaware in the semis.

Algona back to defend 2A gold

ALGONA — Behind several close wins, the Algona wrestling team secured a spot in the Class 2A state duals field on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs will now return to Coralville this Saturday to defend their title.

Eighth-rated Algona bested No. 9 Osage here Tuesday night, 39-24. Last year, the Bulldogs captured gold with a victory over West Delaware in the championship round.

Tyler Friedrich, Teagan Alesch, Thomas Zabka, CJ McGregor, Barrett Morgan, Carter McGregor, Taevyn Zinnel, Brody Shipler and Will Limbaugh were all winners for Algonain the finals.

Zabka claimed an 11-8 decision at 126 pounds on Tuesday; Morgan won 3-0 at 157; Carter McGregor picked up a 5-4 decision at 165; and Shipler prevailed at 190 by a 4-1 count.

Friedrich, Zinnel and Limbaugh had falls while CJ McGregor won by major decision.

Osage advanced to the final with a 52-25 victory over No. 24 Sioux Center.

Titans fall to No. 1 Don Bosco

GILBERTVILLE — The South Central Calhoun wrestling team gained a little momentum heading into districts, scoring a regional dual victory here Tuesday night before falling to defending Class 1A state champion Don Bosco.

The 24th-ranked Titans knocked off No. 13 North Linn, 51-29, but were eliminated by the top-rated Dons, 61-18.

In the opening dual with North Linn, Karson Wuebker, Kase Kraft, Curtis Bullock, Brayden Werneburg, Tucker Freimuth, Cooper Nattress, Brandan Best, Maximus Hardy and Jace Pedersen were all winners.

Freimuth, Nattress and Best all recorded falls, as Kraft, Bullock and Werneburg earned technical fall victories. Wuebker, Hardy and Pedersen were awarded forfeits.

Bullock, Nattress and Pedersen picked up victories vs. Don Bosco. Bullock pinned Kash Frost, while Nattress and Pedersen claimed forfeits.
