Cowboys 3rd, Algona 7th at state duals
CORALVILLE — The Clarion-Goldfield/Dows wrestling team left Xtream Arena with another trophy, placing third here Saturday in Class 2A at the state dual tournament.
The Cowboys handled North Central Conference rival and defending state champion Algona in the quarterfinals, 50-18, but came up short vs. eventual winner Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont in the semifinals, 41-25.
In the third-place match, Clarion-Goldfield/Dows had no trouble with Independence, posting a 36-23 triumph. Cole Wibholm, Estuardo Lopez, Paxton Redenius, Linden Phetxoumphone, Ryan Hartwig, Colin Sesker, Easton Beyer and JT Kelso were all winners vs. Independence.
Adrian Phetxoumphone dropped a close 4-2 decision to Adam Carey in a featured showdown at 126 pounds. He also picked up a big 4-1 sudden-victory over Slater Thomas from Eddyville-BF in that dual and also had a technical fall vs. Algona.
Linden Phetxoumphone and Beyer both finished 3-0 while Hartwig and Kelso went 2-0. Wibholm, Lopez, Redenius, Sesker and Ryland Morgan each won two matches.
For Algona, Barrett Morgan was 3-0 while Brooks Morgan, CJ McGregor, Taevyn Zinnel, Brody Shipler and Tayten Rummel each finished 2-1.
Algona closed out its tourney with a 39-37 victory over Glenwood to place seventh.
Southeast Polk in 3A and Don Bosco in 1A both defended titles, as the Dons won a seventh straight state duals crown.
