Algona crowns two champs
CORALVILLE — Ruby Roof may have been a rookie at the state tournament, but the Algona freshman is very familiar with the big stage.
The top-seeded 125-pounder entered Xtreme Arena as a three-time AAU state champion, and left as a high school gold medalist.
Roof (46-1) pinned her way to the state title, earning the fall over Waverly-Shell Rock’s Camilla Schult in 5:26 on Friday.
In the semifinals Friday morning, Roof handled Ellie Hancock (50-7) of Raccoon River-Northwest by fall in 2:52.
Roof and five other Bulldogs helped Algona to the second place team trophy in Class 2A — the state’s largest class.
The Bulldogs finished with 112 points, while Raccoon River-Northwest had 148.5. Southeast Polk (109) was 3rd.
Second-seeded sophomore Reagan Haynes (43-4) claimed the 190-pound crown with four straight falls.
She won the championship with a pin over Eva Jara (27-10) of Iowa City West in 38 seconds.
She advanced to the championship round with a fall over Marli Badgley (33-10) of North Metro in 3:01.
Third-seeded junior Mara Davis (100) and No. 2 sophomore Regan Jensen (155) both took second.
Davis (37-6) lost to Indianola’s Nora Ohnemus (40-0) by a 15-0 technical fall. Davis advanced to the finals with a 9-4 decision over Kiara Ruiz (36-2) of Spencer.
Jensen (45-3) lost to two-time state champion Skylar Slade (42-0) of Southeast Polk via pin in 4:37.
Jensen advanced to the championship with a 10-7 decision over Layna Demoss (50-7) of Benton Community.
Junior Sienna Fehr (32-4) placed eighth at 135 pounds. Fehr lost her seventh-place match by fall in 3:28 to Josephine Budederi (38-7) of Cedar Rapids Jefferson.
