5 Cowboys, Hendricks, Schafer, Limbaugh in quarters

DES MOINES — Half of Clarion-Goldfield’s 10 qualifiers are still alive for state championships, and four more are in medal contention in Class 2A.

The Cowboys went 12-6 in matches and had a strong day on the backside, going 3-1 there.

Paxton Redenius (120), Adrian Phetxoumphone (126), Linden Phetxoumphone (132), Colin Sesker (157) and JT Kelso (285) all kept their title dreams alive.

Humboldt’s second-seed Broedy Hendricks (190), Eagle Grove’s Hayden Schafer (157) and Algona’s Will Limbaugh (285) earned quarterfinal spots as well on Thursday inside the Casey’s Center.

Class 2A action will resume at 9 a.m. with quarterfinals. Semifinals will start at 4 p.m.

Cole Wibholm (106), Estuardo Lopez (113), Ryland Morgan (165) and Easto Beyer (175) are alive in consolation matches for the Cowboys.

“It’s awesome,” said Clarion-Goldfield-Dows head coach Cory Yoder. “We have worked for this all year.

“All the kids wrestled well and are looking forward to the (next round of) matches. Our kids will be ready. They will be tough.”

The Cowboys are in third in 2A with 44.5 points. Independence (51) is first and Decorah (50.5) is second.

Redenius (36-7) claimed a 4-2 decision over Iowa Falls-Alden’s Zane Gillespie (40-5). Next for Redenius, the eighth seed, will be No. 1 Dylan Williamson (44-0) of Van Meter.

Adrian Phetxoumphone (38-4), the fourth seed, earned a 16-0 tech fall in 3:24 over Mason Glotfelty (31-13) of Decorah. He’ll now face No. 5 Ryan Rose (39-7) of Burlington Notre Dame.

Linden Phetxoumphone (26-2) pinned Kam Roberts (47-10) of Alburntett in 1:30. Next in line for the four seed is No. 5 Colt Boyles (42-3) of Burlington Notre Dame.

Sesker (42-3) won a tight 7-3 decision over Cooper Franklin (48-13) of Alburnett. The sixth seed will now meet No. 3 Liam Weber (30-2) of West Delaware.

Kelso (39-4) dominated Gable Eddy (40-16) of Independence, 8-0. Up next for the five seed is No. 4 Carson Grier (45-5) of Williamsburg.

Wibholm (33-8) lost his opener 20-6, but bounced back with a fall in 30 seconds over Gustavo Chitic-Aguilar (22-22) of Estherville-Lincoln Central. Wibholm, the seventh seed has No. 18 Weston Drahos (28-15) of Williamsburg.

Lopez (29-12) won his opener 17-1, then lost a 16-1 tech fall to Coy Mehlert (44-3) of LaPorte City Union. He stayed alive on the backside with an 18-2 tech fall over Beckett Wernimont (33-16) of Kuemper. The 14th-seeded Lopez now has No. 6 Garrett Pumphrey (42-5) of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Freeman.

Morgan (30-7) won his first-round match, pinning Joey Glendening (40-7) of Burlington, then lost 19-4 to Boden White (53-0) of Denver. He stayed alive with an 8-3 decision over Will Atkinson (46-10) of Woodward-Granger. The 16 seed will now wrestle No. 8 Degan Miller (28-10) of Greene County.

Beyer (41-6) won his opener, beating Taitan Freeman (34-16) of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Freeman, 19-2. He lost an 8-5 decision to Dain Burkhart (38-6) of Fairfield. He stayed alive with a 19-4 tech fall over Kael Chapman (26-13) of Tipton. No. 11 Beyer now has No. 14 Cael Troutman (22-11) of Independence.

Hartwig (22-14) lost by fall in his opener, then dropped a tight 7-5 decision in an elimination match.

Humboldt

Hendricks (51-1) is in search of his first state title and second trip to the finals. The Wildcat junior won a 7-3 decision over Lohen Tank (46-9) of NHTV.

“Broedy had a little slower start to his first period,” said Humboldt head coach Chad Beaman. “His kid did a nice job of slowing the pace and keeping his rear end and feet near the out of bonds.

“It was a little frustrating, but Broedy got his level changes going and opened him up.”

The second-seed now has No. 7 Brian Snyder (44-7) of Centerville.

“I felt I didn’t dominate,” Hendricks said. “I need to stay on my attack and push the pace and suffocate them with my pace.

“I need to get my body in check and get my mind right and wrestle like me.”

Caleb Vinsand (144), Jaxson Kirchhoff (150), and Braden Downs (157) are still alive on the backside.

“Three alive on the back with some gritty performances,” Beaman said. “We had to get a couple matches back, where those kids beat us early in the year.

“Stay loose and score points.”

Vinsand (31-21) lost his opener by major decision, but bounced back with a 14-8 decision over CJ McGregor (28-6) of Algona. Vinsand, the 24 seed, will wrestle No. 17 Ben Buck (33-17) of West Marshall.

Kirchhoff (39-18) won his opener over Kiptyn Lawrence (39-22) of Albia, 13-1. Kirchhoff lost to three-time state champ Blake Fox (47-0) of Osage by fall. He stayed alive with a 9-6 decision over Lane Pennington (25-16) of Davenport Assumption.

Kirchhoff, the 17 seed, has No. 9 Cael Cotter (37-10) of North Polk.

Downs (43-15) won his opener, pinning Gavin Gerbracht (42-7) of Dike-New Hartford, 3:11. He then lost a 17-2 tech fall match, but kept alive on the backside with a 13-0 win over Jacob Vance (24-16) of Osage.

Downs, the 18 seed, will wrestle No. 10 Chayton Snethen (41-5) of Harlan.

Henry Kramer (31-31) lost both his matches at 126. Karson Reinhardt (37-16) fell twice at 132.

Jonny Hayden (28-26) couldn’t get in the win column at 138. Tate Halverson (36-22) was also eliminated from the field at 175 pounds.

Eagle Grove

Schafer (30-6) is looking for his second straight medal in his third state trip. After finishing eighth a year ago, the No. 9 seed will now have top-seeded Mikey Ryan (45-0) of Mount Vernon in the quarterfinals.

In the first round, Schafer earned a 19-4 tech fall over Jose Avila (35-27) of Creston. He then went on to earn a 4-3 decision over Kaden Wiele (37-9) of West Liberty.

Dylan Terwilliger (126) and Jayden Kreitlow (190) are both alive on the backside.

Terwilliger (42-13) lost his first match, but bounced back with a 9-7 decision over Matt Genobana (30-4) of Centerville.

The 17 seed now has No. 10 Tanner Paustian (22-6) of Woodward-Granger.

Kreitlow won his opener, 7-2, over Jacob Aust of Glenwood. He lost in the second round, before staying alive with an 8-1 decision over Jay Georgen (24-23) of West Delaware.

Kreitlow (47-13) will wrestle No. 9 Raif Baack (41-9) of Clear Lake.

Hunter Waldo Martinez (37-17) lost both his matches at 132. He fell 4-3 to Kaden Wiele of West Liberty to be eliminated.

Algona

Senior Will Limbaugh (30-10) is the lone quarterfinalist for the Bulldogs. Limbaugh, the 11 seed, will now face No. 3 Layne Kleppe (45-1) of North Fayette.

Limbaugh pinned Jack Zeleny (22-20) of Sergeant Bluff-Luton in 1:07 and then won a 4-3 decision over No. 6 Maxwell Azzaline (28-8) of Davenport Assumption.

Barrett Morgan (150), Carter McGregor (157), Taevyn Zinnel (165), Brody Shipler (175) and Tayten Rummel (215) are still alive on the backside.

The Bulldogs are in ninth in 2A with 33 points.

Morgan (34-14) advanced to the second round with a fall in 48 seconds over Ben Blizek (27-18) of Centerville before losing. He stayed alive with a 16-7 win over Dayton Gusman (32-14) of Red Oak.

Morgan, the 11 seed, now has No. 19 Carter Jeffs (28-14) of Ballard.

McGregor (22-6) won his opener 7-2 over Bennett Duitsman (31-14) of Estherville-Lincoln Central before losing. He bounced back with a 15-0 tech fall in 3:47 over Jace Inzenbaw (15-7) of Washington.

The 12th seed will wrestle No. 13 Gavin Knutson (39-10) of Decorah next.

Zinnel (32-7) also advanced to the second round, beating Teague Williams (32-16) of Solon 17-2 in 2:51. He lost, but won his wrestleback, 13-3 over Will Goodlove (15-13) of Mount Vernon.

No. 14 Zinnel now has No. 6 Layton Yager (44-5) of Lewis Central.

Shipler (34-13) beat Kael Chapman (26-13) of Tipton 7-3 and lost a tight 5-2 decision. He stayed alive with a fall in 2:57 over Taitan Freeman of Eddyville-Blakesburg-Fremont.

No. 12 Shipler now has No. 13 Brady Grier (37-16) of Williamsburg.

Rummel won 12-1 over Kyler Jensen (18-13) of Solon and lost, 5-1. He bounced back with a 4-2 decision over Jag Jass (29-21) of Iowa Falls-Alden.

The 10th seed will wrestle No. 17 Austyn Kleppe (34-13) of NH/TV.

Teagan Alesch (25-18) lost both his matches at 120 as did Brooks Morgan (32-15) at 132.

CJ McGregor (28-6) won his first match by a 11-6 decision over Cannen Beaumont (36-23) of Denver, before losing twice.

Webster City

Seniors Gavin Wynkoop (144) and Cody Elliott (215) made their most of their state tournament appearances.

Elliott (31-11) — in his second trip to Des Moines — and Wynkoop (27-15) both won their first matches. The senior stayed alive with a win in the second round of consolations over Travin Thomas (35-18) of Atlantic in 5:40.

Wynkoop earned an 8-6 decision over Will Griswold (31-11) of Center Point-Urbana. He then lost a close match to second-seed Brady Patterson (41-2) of Benton, 9-2.

He was eliminated from the field by fall in two minutes to Ben Buck (33-17) of West Marshall.

Elliott won a hard fought 1-0 decision over Austyn Kleppe (33-13) of NH/TV, before losing by fall in 34 seconds to top-seed Mason Koehler (48-1) of Glenwood.

Elliott, the 16 seed, will now square off with No. 8 Dru Diaz (32-12) of Davenport Assumption.

Southeast Valley

Jaguar sophomore Wyatt Blair (46-8) wrestled two tight matches in his first state appearance at 120 pounds.

The 17th-seed fell to No. 16 Stratton Luke (30-8) of LaPorte City Union in a tough 15-12, SV-1 match.

Blair was then eliminated from the tournament with a 7-6 loss to Keaton Schroeder (44-10) of Atlantic.

Greene County

The Rams kept all three of their wrestlers alive on the backside.

Jaron Jacobs (32-10) won his opener at 120 pounds, 16-4 over Carson Tedrow (36-15) of Carroll, before losing by fall.

He stayed alive with a fall in 3:30 over Eli Peiffer (30-24) of Grinnell.

The 11 seed will have No. 14 Levi Evans (34-6) of Mount Pleasant.

Brennan Jacobs (34-5) lost his 106 opener, but bounced back with a fall in 2:40 over Angel Gomez-Perez (29-13) of Clarke.

Jacobs, the eighth seed, has No. 17 Curran Meyer (35-20) of Independence.

Miller (28-10) fell in the second round at 165, then won a 7-2 decision over Keagan Schultz (31-14) of North Fayette.

Miller, the eighth seed, has 16th-seed Ryland Morgan (30-7) of Clarion-Goldfield-Dows.
