4 area teams play for girls state bids

Four area teams will take the court to try and earn spots at the girls state basketball tournament on Wednesday in the regional final round.

In Class 1A, top-ranked Bishop Garrigan heads to Mason City to face Top of the Iowa Conference rival and 12th-rated Lake Mills. No. 2 (1A) Newell-Fonda faces George-Little Rock in Cherokee, and 13th-ranked North Union takes on No. 5 Lynnville-Sully in Webster City.

Emmetsburg, rated fifth in 2A, faces No. 14 Maquoketa Valley in Hampton.

All games begin at 7 p.m.

The winners advance to the state tournament, which begins Monday in Des Moines at the Casey’s Center. Two of the 2A quarterfinal games complete the schedule on Tuesday, March 3, while the rest take place Wednesday, March 4, alongside all four 1A quarters.

Bishop Garrigan (21-2 overall) looks to return to state after reaching the semifinals last year. Returning starters Graclyn Eastman, Sacha Alesch and Emmi Bartolo are all back from last winter.

Eastman averages 17 points and nine rebounds per game, Alesch adds 14 points and Bartolo 10 with five assists.

Lake Mills (17-5) dropped both regular season games vs. the Golden Bears and have lost 22 of 23 to them since 2014. Junior Cora Sauer leads the Bulldogs at 20 points, six rebounds and four assists a night.

Defending state runner-up Newell-Fonda (21-2) is balanced again, with Ellie Sievers averaging 15.6 points, Quinn Sievers 11 and Rylee Hogrefe almost 10. The Mustangs score 69 points per game and have made 135 triples on the year.

George-Little Rock (19-4) leans on Lindsey Haken, as the sophomore leads the squad in scoring (20.3), rebounding (10.6) and assists (4.9). Grace Ubbinga adds 10.3 points and nine rebounds.

North Union (15-8) looks to hand Lynnville-Sully (23-0) its first loss of the season. The Warriors are led by Ainsley Ulrich, as the junior averages almost 21 points a night.

For the Hawks, Kate Harthoorn is the leading scorer at 13 points followed by Breah Lowry and Isabelle Vos.

Emmetsburg (22-2) is led by senior Rachel Schany, a track and field standout who is averaging 21.6 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest. Junior Dylan Fiene adds 13 points and senior Nora Nelson chips in six.

Maquoketa Valley (19-4) counters with Audra Burbridge, a senior averaging 21 points. Grace Richter adds 16 and Lanni Beaman almost eight.

The remaining 1A regional finals include GTRA vs. Exira-EHK, Saint Ansgar vs. Gladbrook-Reinbeck, Coon Rapids-Bayard vs. Council Bluffs St. Albert, Dunkerton vs. Edgewood-Colesburg and Kee vs. Springville.

In 2A, the other regional championships will see Iowa City Regina take on Grundy Center, Earlham play defending state champion Hinton, Sioux Central meet Rock Valley, Cascade face Denver, Westwood play Central Lyon, West Lyon battle Riverside and Treynor meet Pleasantville.
