1A area wrestlers bound for state

HOLSTEIN — Three Pocahontas Area and two East Sac County wrestlers earned bids to the Class 1A state tournament here on Saturday at districts.

Pocahontas Area’s Jakob Lawson, William Lawson and Adam Marsh advanced, as Marsh earned a district title while the other two placed second.

Marsh, competing at 215 pounds, claimed a fall followed by two close decisions to win gold. He pinned Kyson Turnquist of Ridge View; downed Clay VanAenam of Audubon in the semifinals, 1-0; and slipped past Jason Bremer from Lawton-Bronson in the finals, 3-2.

Jakob Lawson scored a victory in the true second-place match at 106 pounds over Izaac Ricke of Lawton-Bronson, 8-3, after falling in a thrilling final to Wyatt Hieber of MVAOCOU, 11-10. He also had a technical fall earlier in the tourney.

At 175 pounds, William Lawson followed the same path as Jakob, rebounding from a championship match loss to Lane Mitchell of Lawton-Bronson with a fall vs. Mason Kasperbauer of Audubron in just 70 seconds.

For East Sac County, Dawson Allen and Cal McCollough each secured state bids with runner-up finishes.

Allen punched his spot with a 6-0 decision in the true second-place match at 165. Allen rallied through the consolations, earning a technical fall and a fall to get his shot at Nash Larson of Alta-Aurelia.

McCollough reached the finals at 285 before coming up short vs. Lane Meyer of Audubon. He earned the bid thanks to a major decision in the semifinals over Wilson Aljet from Alta-Aurelia.

Wittrock, Newman, Anderson qualify from MNW

3 Cougars reach state

OGDEN — The Manson Northwest Webster wrestling team earned three bids to the upcoming Class 1A state tournament here on Saturday in district action.

Keaton Wittrock and Mason Anderson advanced as district champs, while Hunter Newman moved on as a runner-up for MNW.

Wittrock, competing at 106 pounds, scored a fall and a major decision, improving to 34-9 on the year. He pinned Cael Nelson from North Tama in just 28 seconds, before claiming gold with a 9-1 major decision over Easton Webb of Martensdale-St. Marys.

Anderson, wrestling at 190, also had a fall and a major decision for his crown. He pinned Michael Gretillat of West Hancock in 2:41 before topping Parker Stuck of South Hamilton, 14-6, to move to 37-7 overall.

Newman advanced thanks to his semifinal win over Landon Alexander of Ogden. He fell to Blake Schwartz from Panorama in the 165-pound finale.

Newman is now 42-8 on the year.

Jaggar Wolfe was third and Eli Schoon took fourth for the Cougars.

Five Titans make it to state

OAKLAND — The South Central Calhoun wrestling team had a big district tournament on Saturday, earning five Class 1A bids.

Karson Wuebker and Jace Pedersen claimed titles while Kase Kraft, Curtis Bullock and Cooper Nattress were all runner-ups.

Wuebker scored fall falls in a total time of 35 seconds at 106 pounds, as he will carry a 56-2 record on the year into his state return. He pinned Landon Thayer of Logan-Magnolia in the finals in 23 seconds.

Pedersen, a heavyweight, also had two falls to advance, pushing his record to 50-6. In the finals, he pinned Jakob Brewer from West Monona-Whiting in 1:55.

Kraft qualified at 113, coming up short in the finals vs. Brodie Johnson of Logan-Magnolia via decision, 6-4. He advanced thanks to his semifinal win over Casen Richards of West Monona-Whiting via pin.

Bullock took the same path, falling to Crosby Yoder of Logan-Magnolia in the 120-pound final but earning the runner-up spot after pinning Maxx Danker of Riverside Oakland in the semis.

Nattress advanced on the heels of his semifinal round win over Brentyn Hoover of CAM by fall after falling in the 175-pound final to Robert Bothwell from Logan-Magnolia.

Coltley Timmerman, Brandan Best and Maximus Hardy all finished third for the Titans.

7 area wrestlers advance

LAKE MILLS — West Bend-Mallard’s Hunter Lester and Mason Knapp dominated to earn Class 1A state wrestling tournament bids on Saturday in a district meet.

They will be joined by Brayden Yates, Ryan Wirtz, Nick Saxton and CJ Rodriguez of Emmetsburg.

Yates, Wirtz and Saxton all won district titles like Lester and Knapp. North Union’s Castor Kollasch also claimed a state bid.

Lester, competing at 106 pounds, improved to 32-1 after earning a major decision and a technical fall. He bested Micah Skogen of Lake Mills in the finals, 16-1 in 5:52.

Knapp, a returning state qualifier, locked up the 120-pound title by pinning Lane Knudseon of Central Springs in the finals in 3:13. He also had a 27-second fall and is now 32-8 this year.

Yates had a fall in 64 seconds and picked up a 9-6 decision over Andrew Hall from Saint Ansgar in the 165-pound final, as he will carry a record of 33-8 into state.

Wirtz had just one official match, claiming a 5-4 decision over Lincoln Blickenderfer of Central Springs at 190 to move to 27-2.

Saxton won at 285 pounds, claiming two falls in a total of 79 seconds to improve to 36-6.

Rodriguez advanced thanks to his semifinal round win over Linca Scarlett of Northwood-Kensett at 126 after falling in the finals.

Kollasch finished second at 144 for the Warriors, earning a true second with a fall after coming up short in the finals. He owns a record of 38-14 on the year.
