Bobby Thompson challenged his 14th-ranked Fort Dodge wrestling team before their dual on Thursday night.
The Dodgers heard the message loud and clear, delivering a resounding victory against Ames in the FDSH gym.
Fort Dodge won all 14 matches to earn a 77-0 shutout victory.
“We only have two home duals, so I told them to come out and be aggressive and make a statement,” Thompson said. “I wanted them to use this opportunity to improve and adjust from (last) Saturday.”
Thursday marked the most points and first dual shutout in a dual for the Dodgers since blanking Des Moines North/Hoover 80-0 on Dec. 12, 2019.
Fort Dodge earned bonus-point victories in all but one match, and had eight pins to go along with four technical falls, a win by forfeit and a decision.
The most impressive stat of the night was that the Dodgers didn’t give up a single takedown, scoring first in every match.
In the 14 victories, Fort Dodge wrestlers spent just 30 minutes and 10 seconds on the mat.
Senior Angel Sandoval, who has been with the program for all four years, picked up his first career win with an 8-2 decision.
“Angel epitomizes what being a Dodger wrestler is about,” Thompson said. “He paid his dues and earned his spot in the lineup, being with the program for four years.
“He is a great kid.”
Sophomore Amari McCaleb earned the fastest fall, pinning Little Cyclone Archer Dean in 46 seconds.
Four of the falls happened in the first period. Top-ranked Dreshaun Ross (18-0) cruises to a fall in 55 seconds. Ross recorded five quick takedowns to take an 18-5 lead before earning his pin.
Ross is now 129-2 in his career and has won 120 straight high school matches. The future Oklahoma State commit is sitting in 15th on Fort Dodge’s all-time win charts, behind 2006 FDSH graduate Grant Ruge (130-25). Ross is second behind four-time state champion Brody Teske (2014-18), who had a .994 percentage with a career mark of 177-1. Ross’s success rate is currently at .992.
Trace Rial (120) earned a fall in 1:16, while freshman Mason Zuspann (144) recorded a pin in 1:04 of the first period.
“Mason has been filling at 144 and doing a great job,” He came out and wrestled aggressively (on Thursday).”
Also picking up falls were Damien Yeoman (113) in 2:50, Hunter Kasperbauer (132) in 3:51, Jayce Skow (175) in 2:28 and Cael Adams (215) in 4:28.
In the technical-fall victories, senior Sam Davidson (126) scored the most points with a 21-4 win in 2:05.
Knox Ayala (106) started the dual off with an 18-3 tech in 2:18. Senior Caiden Fraher (157) picked up his tech in two minutes with a 19-3 win.
“Cael had a big win to hopefully build some momentum moving forward,” Thompson said. “It was nice to see Hunter and Sam picked up decisive wins as seniors.”
Senior Jesse Egli (190) rolled 19-4 in 4:28. Senior Rylee Brown (165) took his match via pin.
Egli now has 104 career wins and Brown has 105.
The Dodgers are back in action on Saturday at the J-Hawk Invitational in Cedar Rapids.
