Two Wildcats earn state spots
DENVER — The Humboldt girls punched two state wrestling tickets here on Friday night.
Danica Diedrick won the 170-pound championship in a Class 1A regional meet, while Laina Dettmann was the runner-up at 120 pounds.
Diedrick (34-3) pinned her way to the championship with a pair of first-period falls and a 3:30 win over Elsie Kuper (30-8) of Hampton-Dumont/CAL.
Dettman (34-8) reached the championship match, but lost a tight 12-10 decision to Remington Wadsworth (34-4) of South Winneshiek. She advanced on criteria with no true second match.
Olyvia Satern (110) lost her second-place match by fall in 44 seconds to Braelyn Suckow (43-4) of Sumner-Friedericksburg.
Dayton Cleghorn (145) finished third for Humboldt, but didn’t get to wrestle back.
Mia Sorensen (155) had a chance to earn a spot, but lost in the semifinal and eventually dropped her the second-place match to Juliette Koch of Hampton-Dumont by in 2:55.
Kennedy Robinson (235) reached the semis, bounced back with two straight wins and took third, but didn’t get a wrestle back.
Eagle Grove
Marlee Thompson (38-12) lost in the semifinals, but bounced back with two straight falls.
Thompson didn’t earn a wrestleback opportunity.
CLASS 1A
Cougars advance two
HULL — Manson Northwest Webster will have two wrestlers competing at the girls state tournament next week.
Payton Peterson (120) and Gertie Kohnen (140) both finished as regional runner-ups, fighting back through the true second-place matches.
Peterson (26-15) advanced to the finals, losing a 15-6 major decision. She earned a state spot with a fall in 1:28 in her wrestleback match over Khai Utesch of Akron-Westfield.
Kohnen (23-13) lost by fall in the championship round, but earned a state spot with a fall in a 1:35 over Britany Castelan of Boyden-Hull/Rock Valley.
South Central Calhoun
The Titans will have three state representatives next week.
Emery Kramer (39-6) won a regional championship at 110 pounds, while Goldie Davis (100) and Meia Hefley (135) were runner-ups.
Kramer won all three of her matches by fall, including two in under a minute. She pinned Cassie McKeen of Spirit Lake in 3:31 to advance.
Davis (44-11), a Southeast Valley student, lost in the finals but advanced on criteria. She had a fall in the quarterfinals and a major decision in semifinals.
Hefley (41-13) fell for gold, but advanced on criteria. She won by fall in the quarters and a tight 1-0 decision in the semis.
Emmetsburg
Taylor Thayer (120) and Paytn Haack (145) both advanced as regional champs, while MaKenna Burns (170) was a runner-up.
Thayer (41-6) had three falls on the day and beat Josie Lennon of Akron-Westfield 12-1 in the title round.
Haack (42-6) pinned Central Lyon-George Little Rock’s Taya Metzger in 1:46. She had two pins in the opening rounds.
Burns lost in the championship round after two falls and advanced on criteria.
CLASS 2A
Six Bulldogs onto state
NEVADA — The Algona girls wrestling squad had a banner day in a Class 2A regional meet.
The Bulldogs won six regional titles and advanced seven wrestlers to state.
Mara Davis (34-5) had two falls to win the 100-pound title. Laura Stohr (28-8) had three pins and won the 115-pound crown with a pin in 33 seconds.
It only took Ruby Roof (42-1) two matches to win the 125-pound gold. She clinched a spot with a pin in 3:01.
Regan Jensen (42-2) made quick work of her opponents, earning a fall in 30 seconds, 41 seconds and an 11-1 major decision to claim the championship at 155.
Reagan Haynes (39-4) had a technical fall and a fall at 190 pounds.
Sienna Fehr (30-11) finished second at 135. She lost in the finals and then advanced on criteria.
Webster City
Kali Hartnett (22-5) advanced to a wrestleback match, but didn’t earn a victory.
Hartnett lost the 120-pound finals by an 18-2 score. She moved to the true-second match, where she lost by pin.
