MIAMI, Okla. — The Iowa Central wrestling team turned the NJCAA Coaches Duals into another home meet here this past weekend, walking away with the eighth championship from the event in program history.
The Tritons rolled through pool round action and bracket play before taking care of Western Wyoming in the finals by a score of 20-12.
“It all started early for us and the ball just kept rolling,” ICCC head coach Luke Moffitt said. “It’s a long trip, with early mornings and late nights, but with the way we wrestled and performed, it was all worth it.
“We were lucky in that we brought over 30 kids to the meet by driving. Teams that fly only bring 16 or so. That gave us a home-field advantage because we had kids around the mats at all times cheering any hyping each other up.”
Iowa Central bested Cowley in the quarterfinals, 34-12, and Clackamas in the semis, 34-7, after a flawless round of duals on Friday that saw them go 5-0 with 15 technical falls, 13 falls and five major decisions.
In the three bracket duals, the Tritons won 17 times by technical fall, 16 via pin and scored 10 more major decisions.
“In 2009, we shut our opponent out in the finals,” Moffitt said. “That was a pretty impressive performance. But in terms of the entire tournament, that was only eight teams and this one had over 20, so to do what we did for two days was very special and ranks right up there.
“We won several key matchups that will help us in terms of the rankings and the seedings for nationals, so that was another bonus.”
Tegan Sherk and Jarrel Miller both went 7-0, Michael Myers finished 6-0, and Kaden King was 5-0. Che Jenkins won seven of his eight matches, Damarcus Powe put together a 5-1 tournament, and both Temuulen Mendbileg and Marcelo Rosario went 4-1.
Gary Walker III and Zaman Anwar finished 3-0 in action.
