Triton men edged in showdown
OVERLAND PARK, Kan. — A back-and-forth battle between two Top-6 teams came down to the wire here Saturday, as Johnson County clipped the Iowa Central men’s basketball squad by a final of 91-89.
Avian Webb sank a 3-pointer with six seconds left to push the third-ranked Cavaliers in front. The No. 6 Tritons had a chance to win it, but Jordan Cain’s triple came up short.
Cain finished with 30 points, making six 3-pointers on the day, as Dorian Pruitt added 20 points and Manny Lueth had a double-double, scoring 14 with 11 rebounds, six assists and five blocked shots for Iowa Central (15-2 overall).
For Johnson County (16-0), Webb had a team-high 23 off the bench, as Tavian Cruse scored 17 and both Gavin Harvey and Trey Fulcher scored 15.
“Hard loss on the road to a really good and really well-coached Johnson County team,” ICCC head coach Mason Denholm said. “At the end of the day, they were just a little tougher with the ball than we were and took advantage of some of our miscues and we didn’t capitalize on theirs.
“I know this one really stung our group and know they and our staff will get back to it as we jump back into ICCAC play.”
Cain carried the offensive load in the first 20 minutes, scoring 18 to give the Tritons a 47-37 advantage. Iowa Central finished the game 21-for-45 from the 3-point line and recorded 21 assists on 30 made field goals.
Jalen Wynter had 15 points, Aleix Sempere recorded nine rebounds and Cain had seven assists with four steals.
The Tritons return home to host North Iowa Area on Wednesday night.
