Ross dominates again with Mendenhall title

Fort Dodge’s Dreshaun Ross has been atop the mountain for the past four years, and has been knocking down everyone trying to bump him from the throne.
The three-time state champion has wreaked havoc on Iowa opponents during his entire time as a prep. On Saturday, the Oklahoma State University commit picked up three falls and a technical fall on his way to the Mendenhall championship.
In the title round, Ross (17-0) pinned Joseph Favia in 1:29. Favia, from Marmion Academy, is the top-rated wrestler in Illinois.
Ross also earned falls in 15 and 40 seconds. He picked up a 21-6 technical fall as well.
The Dodger superstar has now won 119 matches and is 128-2 in his career.
“On paper you would think Dreshaun is wrestling against kids that aren’t ranked highly, but he’s just so talented and on another level,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “He beat the No. 1 kid in Illinois handily, and made light work of everyone.”
The Dodgers finished sixth as a team with 133 points. Marmion Academy (257.5) was the champion, followed by West Des Moines Dowling (206) and Waverly-Shell Rock (153.5).
Knox Ayala (106), Damien Yeoman (113), Rylee Brown (165) and Jesse Egli (190) all took third for the Dodgers. Trace Rial (120) finished fourth and Jayce Skow (175) was sixth.
In an ultra-competitive tournament with 16 squads, Ayala, Rial, Brown and Egli reached the semis.
“We had a tough round in the semifinals, but the guys fought through in the third-place matches,” Thompson said. “We lost some matches we thought we could have or should have won. We are still making some mental mistakes and technical mistakes.
“We need to improve our mat IQ. We had leads where we got beat and could have moved up in placement matches.”
Ayala (14-4) dropped a 4-0 decision to Cruz Gannon (19-0) of Dowling. He fought back with a 13-3 win over Easton Landas of Boone.
“I don’t feel like we fared very well in the seeding. We got a lot of four seeds, that put us with the No. 1s (in the semis),” Thompson said. “Knox had a tough weight but came out strong.
“Damien had a tough loss in the quarters, but fought back and had a good tourney, finishing third.”
Egli (14-5) a three-time state qualifier, reached 100 career wins with four victories. He is now 103-66 as a Dodger.
Egli lost to Brayden Koester of Bettendorf by fall. He came back with a fall in 1:04, then picked up a 13-4 major decision to earn bronze.
Brown (13-5) lost a 13-7 match to top-rated Caleb Rathjen of Ankeny in the semifinals. He bounced back with a 52-second fall and a 11-1 major decision.
Brown is now 104-68 in his FDSH career.
Yeoman (13-7) closed with four straight victories. He had two falls, a major decision and a decision.
“Jesse and I had a conversation during the tournament about what medal he wants in February,” Thompson said. “He wrestled tough and came away with some big wins.
“Rylee was in a challenging bracket and competed in a tough match against Rathjen.”
The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they host Ames. Fort Dodge will be in the Dodger gym the next two Thursdays for their only home duals of the year.
The Fort Dodge junior varsity squad finished second at the St. Edmond Duals on Saturday.
