One night after setting the new career scoring record at St. Edmond, Hunter Horn posted his single-game all-time best point total, leading the fourth-ranked (Class 1A) Gaels to an 84-61 victory over Hampton-Dumont/CAL here Friday night.

Horn scored a career-high 44 points — including 25 in the second half — as St. Edmond (15-2 overall, 9-1 in the North Central Conference) started off an extended run of games inside the SEHS gym in impressive fashion.

Carson Bargfrede, playing in front of his future college coach, added 20 points, with 10 of those coming in the first period. Bargfrede has committed to play for former Iowa Hawkeye standout Jeff Horner at Buena Vista University in the fall.

Grant Galles added eight points, Jakob Koopman chipped in five points with five steals, and Jack McElroy recorded 12 assists.

For the Bulldogs (5-11, 3-7), Brady Harr had 16 and Caden Woods 13.

Despite the lopsided final score, Hampton-Dumont/CAL pushed St. Edmond in the early going, trading basket for basket to keep within two possessions.

“We just couldn’t string much together there early on and had trouble keeping them off the glass,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “They had some kids knock down big shots and really pushed us early on.

“But credit the kids because they stuck to the plan and continued to execute on both ends of the floor.”

Horn, limited to five points in the opening eight minutes, got going in the second, scoring 14 to help the Gaels take a 10-point cushion into the break. He now has 1,592 points in his St. Edmond career.

“Hunter just really got into a zone there,” Kochendorfer said. “He works so hard and just has an incredible ability for finishing around the basket. He also stepped out and knocked down some big shots.

“Carson had a great game, too. He attacked the basket and was able to finish. Jack was impressive dishing the ball, Jakob did all the little things he has done all season and Grant had some big plays on defense.”

Horn finished off his 15-point third with a triple that just beat the buzzer, giving the Gaels a 60-44 advantage while capping a 10-2 run. He also grabbed nine rebounds and had two steals.

St. Edmond returns to action on Monday when they host Humboldt.
