No. 4 Gaels roll on the road
Horn needs 15 points to become school’s all-time leading scorer
ALGONA — The fourth-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys used a big early run to complete the season sweep over Algona here Tuesday night, 84-48.
The Gaels (13-2 overall, 8-1 in the North Central Conference) were led by Hunter Horn, as the senior scored 23 points to move closer to surpassing Andrew Gibb for the career scoring record.
Horn now has 1,525 points as a Gael. Gibb leads with 1,539.
Carson Bargfrede added 15 points, Jakob Koopman and Logan Hanson each contributed 11, and Grant Galles finished with 10.
“We were without Jack (McElroy), as he was sick,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “Grant did a great job of stepping into the point guard role. He handled the pressure, distributed the ball and also rebounded well.
“We really did a great job on the glass against a big, physical team in Algona.”
St. Edmond raced out to a 19-9 lead and never looked back, going up by 18 at the break.
“I was proud of the effort, especially to start the game,” Kochendorfer said. “On the road, you always want to come right out and take control. I thought we did a great job of that.”
For the Bulldogs (8-5, 3-4), Nathan Manske scored a team-high 15 points.
St. Edmond remains on the road, heading to West Bend-Mallard on Thursday. They close out the season with five consecutive games at home starting Friday vs. Hampton-Dumont/CAL.
