No. 15 Dodgers hit the road

MASON CITY — The Fort Dodge wrestling team will have a busy stretch as the postseason is just around the corner.

The 15th-ranked Dodgers (6-3 overall) will wrestle their final dual as they head to Mason City.

Junior varsity action begins at 6:30 p.m. with varsity to follow.

“We just have to go in and wrestle the best we can,” said Fort Dodge head coach Bobby Thompson. “We have bigger things ahead, but we still have to focus on what is in front of us.”

The Dodgers wrapped up their home portion of the season with a win against Marshalltown last Thursday.

Fort Dodge placed fifth at the Ed Winger Invitational.

Top-ranked Dreshaun Ross (26-0) was a champion at 285, while freshman Knox Ayala (22-5) placed second at 106.

Trace Rial (120), and Rylee Brown (165) were third, while Damien Yeoman (113) and Jesse Egli (190) were fourth and fifth respectively.

Ross, the Oklahoma State University signee, has won 128 consecutive matches as a Dodger and is 137-2 overall in his high school career. Ross is now tied with Erik Birnbaum (2015) for 10th on Fort Dodge’s all-time win list. He is second to Brody Teske (.994) for all time win percentage at .992.

Brown and Egli have also passed the 100-win plateau this season with Brown at 112 wins and Egli at 110.

The Dodgers will then compete at the Iowa Alliance Conference meet in Ottumwa on Saturday.

“I feel like the conference meet helps us get ready for the postseason,” Thompson said. “There will be some good matches and we should farewell in a lot of them.”

After Saturday the postseason will begin as the Dodgers will compete in a regional dual against No. 18 Johnston in Indianola. The winner will face the Indians for the right to advance to state duals on Feb. 7.

“We want to use the conference meet to help propel us into the regional dual,” Thompson said. “It should be a good tournament for all 14 guys. Ames has three or four good kids and Waterloo has a couple that can contribute.”
