WEBSTER CITY — The top-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys overcame some early struggles to post a 54-35 victory over Webster City here Friday night.

After falling behind by eight in the first, the Gaels (10-1 overall, 6-1 in North Central Conference) went on a 17-4 run and never looked back.

Hunter Horn scored a game-high 33 points, as Jack McElroy added eight. Both Jakob Koopman and Carson Bargfrede scored six.

“Give Webster City credit because they had a good plan and they executed,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “They got some good shots and knocked them down, and we didn’t move the ball well.

“But in the second quarter, we started making 4-to-5 passes and finding a good look. Our defensive intensity also picked up.”

For the Lynx (2-8, 1-5), Alex Staley had nine and Coyce Bertran eight.

“Jack did a nice job of getting into the lane and converting,” Kochendorfer said. “I thought our second half effort was really strong. We continued to execute on offense and played great defense.”

Horn hit the 1,400-point mark for his career, moving within 38 of passing Nick Clark for second on the school’s career scoring list.

St. Edmond heads to fourth-ranked (1A) Bishop Garrigan on Monday. The Gaels will travel to Iowa Falls-Alden on Tuesday and host Clarion-Goldfield/Dows next Friday as the second half of NCC play begins.

Webster City is at Hampton-Dumont/CAL on Tuesday and hosts Humboldt Friday.
