Gaels earn sweep of IF-A
IOWA FALLS — The St. Edmond girls kicked off a big week with a 49-44 victory over Iowa Falls-Alden here Tuesday night.
The Gaels (9-3 overall, 5-2 in North Central Conference) earned their first sweep of the Cadets since 2015, having also bested them at home earlier this year, 58-31.
Eden Horn had a team-high 15 points, as both Sophia Schlienz and Anna Lursen each scored nine for St. Edmond. Chloe Palmer and Abby Huss both chipped in five, as Olivia Andrew added three.
“Give them credit because they came out and out-hustled us early on,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “They were getting to loose balls and rebounds while attacking the basket. We were just a little shell-shocked.
“But Abby knocked down a big 3-pointer and that gave us some relief and got the juice flowing. Sophia had three 3-pointers and we were able to clean several things up.”
Palmer moved into a tie for 16th on the school’s career 5-on-5 scoring chart with Julie Drzycimski. The junior has now scored 615 points.
Iowa Falls-Alden (7-6, 4-3) jumped out to an early 5-0 lead before St. Edmond closed the quarter on a 13-2 run, taking a 13-9 lead. They would hold a four-point edge at the half, as well.
Elody England had a game-high 21 points to lead the Cadets, but she was the only player in double figures.
“We didn’t play our best, but to still get a road win over an improving team like Iowa Falls-Alden was a positive,” Tracy said. “We got punched in the mouth and had to find a way to recover from it. That will help us as a group moving forward.”
St. Edmond can get to the 10-win mark on Friday vs. Clarion-Goldfield/Dows for the first time since the 2014-15 season.
