Gaels can’t stop Algona

ALGONA — The St. Edmond girls got out to lead against Algona, but couldn’t hold on Tuesday night.

The Gaels (10-4 overall) built a 16-11 advantage in the third quarter, but the Bulldogs (12-4) came storming back for a 57-39 victory, ending the Gaels’ five game win streak.

“We got caught up in how the game was being called and not going our way,” said St. Edmond head coach CJ Tracy. “Our tired legs got to us and our shots stopped falling, but we battled to the end.”

15th-ranked Algona took the lead into the locker room. With the score tied 23-23, the Bulldogs went into halftime with a 26-23 lead after an and-1.

The Gaels were still in after the third quarter, down 40-35. Algona outscored the Gaels 17-4 in the fourth quarter.

“We let a few things affect us that we shouldn’t have,” Tracy said. “We continued to battle and got down 10 early in the fourth quarter.

“Things snowballed and we started to force it a little bit. We made some mental mistakes and didn’t consistently execute our gameplan.”

Freshman Katie Limbaugh led the Bulldogs with 17 points, as four players reached double figures. Maya Lentz had 13 points, while Bella Jo Dunning had 11 and Gabby Venteicher added 10.

For the Gaels, junior Chloe Palmer had 17 to pace the Gaels. Abby Huss had 14.

“I continue to be proud of these girls,” Tracy said. “They play hard and are getting back to work.”

St. Edmond is back in action on Thursday at West Bend-Mallard.
