Gael wrestlers face stern test on road

CLARION — The St. Edmond wrestling team saw two of the premier programs in the state on the mat here Thursday night.

The Gaels squared off with No. 1 (Class 1A) Don Bosco, second-ranked (2A) Clarion-Goldfield/Dows and Charles City, dropping all three duals.

Nick Utley and Matthew Crimmins each scored falls in the dual with Charles City, as St. Edmond came up just short, 34-30. Utley pinned Sam Northrop in 46 seconds and Crimmins did the same vs. Connor Jenkins in 3:14.

Owen Rutherford, Cooper Cokeley and Sam Touney were each awarded a forfeit.

Crimmins had the lone victory vs. the Cowboys, earning a fall vs. Josue Hernandez in 41 seconds as Clarion-Goldfield/Dows won, 77-6.

Don Bosco shut the Gaels out, 81-0. Crimmins pushed Dawson Youngblut, an Iowa Hawkeye commit and defending state champion, to the third period before falling via technical fall.

JT Kelso cemented a 39-38 victory for the Cowboys over the Dons with a fall in 11 seconds at heavyweight. Linden Phetxoumphone, Dawson Beyer, Colin Sesker, Ryland Morgan, Easton Beyer and Eli Hodge all added victories.

Earlier this week, Don Bosco knocked off No. 2 (3A) West Des Moines Dowling and Creighton Prep out of Nebraska to reach 1,000 duals won all-time.

St. Edmond heads to the Loyd Shaffer Invitational hosted by Marion on Saturday.

Starting at $4.94/week.
