Gael girls improve to 7-3 with big victory

Behind a 25-5 opening quarter, the St. Edmond girls were able to secure a 64-35 victory over Manson Northwest Webster here Thursday night.

Eden Horn scored 18 points with 12 rebounds, Chloe Palmer added 14 points, and Abby Huss chipped in nine for the Gaels (7-3 overall).

Leading the way for the Cougars (1-10) was Bellah Aquino with 12 points.

St. Edmond caused eight turnovers and saw Horn scored eight points in the first eight minutes, as the home squad scored the first 16 points of the contest en route to the triumph. Sophia Schlienz drained a pair of 3-pointers during the run.

“I thought that was one of the best first quarters we’ve played all year,” SEHS head coach CJ Tracy said. “We did a much better job of ball pressure and converting turnovers into points.

“We were aggressive, worked the ball inside and found the open shooters.”

The Gaels had built a commanding 40-12 lead by halftime, limiting mistakes and continuing to apply pressure to Manson Northwest Webster.

“I was happy with the way we played, especially from our core rotation,” Tracy said. “We didn’t turn the ball over much and we remained patient on offense.”

After losing 11 straight from 2011-24 to the Cougars, St. Edmond has now won each of the last two meetings, scoring over 60 points in both games.

Palmer added six steals, four rebounds and a block, Anna Lursen tallied four steals and Jade Rock had six points off the bench.

Addison McCullough recorded 10 points and nine rebounds for MNW. Makayla Reekers and Alison Nimke each had six boards.

The Gaels, who are a win away from matching last year’s victory total, return to action on Friday when they travel to Webster City for North Central Conference play. St. Edmond hasn’t prevailed in at least nine games since 2014-15.

Manson Northwest Webster hosts Emmetsburg in Twin Lakes Conference action.
