Gael boys handle Manson NW Webster

The top-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys had no trouble here Thursday night with Manson Northwest Webster.

Hunter Horn scored a game-high 27 points, Carson Bargfrede added 13 and the Gaels rolled to a 77-31 victory.

Horn, who threw down a pair of thunderous dunks, added 12 rebounds and three blocked shots. Bargfrede, who had his own slam early in the game, also drained three 3-pointers for St. Edmond (9-1 overall).

Leading the way for the Cougars (4-7) was Coy Moline with 16 points.

Holding a 16-10 lead entering the second quarter, the Gaels went to work, scoring the first 16 points of the period. Manson Northwest Webster finally got on the board with 1:44 to play before halftime.

“We really came out and did a great job on defense in that quarter,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “We played great last Monday, had a great practice Tuesday but didn’t have a good practice on Wednesday.

“I think that kind of showed early, but credit the kids because they regrouped and came out strong.”

Horn had 10 in the quarter while Jakob Koopman scored all eight of his points to help St. Edmond build a 27-point advantage.

Things continued to go in favor of the Gaels after the break, as Horn scored nine in the third before playing limited minutes for the remainder of the game.

“It’s important that we continue to take the right steps forward from here on out,” Kochendorfer said. “The games are only going to get tougher and we still have some little things we need to get better at.”

Grant Galles recorded 10 points with six rebounds and four steals, Koopman added four rebounds and three steals, and Jack McElroy had three steals in the rout. Ty Mericle scored nine points on three triples, adding four rebounds off the bench.

Charlie Sturgis scored nine points with four rebounds for the Cougars.

The Gaels conclude a three-game week Friday night at Webster City. Manson Northwest Webster hosts Emmetsburg.
