The Fort Dodge girls wrestling team continues to check off historical marks in the program’s short frame of existence.
On Thursday night, the Dodgers earned their first home victory in school history with a 51-28 triumph over Boone.
The Dodgers dropped the first dual of the night to Ames, 60-24.
“I’m proud of the girls for the way they wrestled in their home gym,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “We continue to set new program marks, and winning our first home dual is a big one to get.”
Fort Dodge recorded nine match wins over the Toreadors, including six by fall and two forfeits.
Shayley Butrick (110), Brooklyn Nelson (115), Tori Jakeman (170) and Ava Potter (235) were all double winners.
Jakeman had two first-period falls, pinning Boone’s Alissa Kirsch in 40 seconds and Ames’ Taylor Glenney in 1:29.
“Tori had a great night,” Koenig said. “She came out and wrestled aggressively.
“Those were good matches and she controlled them.”
Potter had two fall in under a minute, knocking off Ames’ Miranda Ross in 31 seconds and Boone’s Brooklynn Elliott in 59 seconds.
Nelson’s falls came in 3:06 against Maha Behbah of Ames and 3:18 versus Reese Majors of Boone.
“Ava and Brooklyn had great nights and did what we expected,” Koenig said. “I showed Ava the (other) conference wrestlers (at Potter’s weight), and she knows she has a great shot at placing.”
Butrick pinned Ames’ Zoe Mytides in 1:20 and earned a forfeit victory in the Boone matchup.
“Shayley and Brooklyn are great examples of strength and speed,” Koenig said. “Shayley is strong and Brooklyn’s outside sweep is so quick.”
Fans had the chance to see a potential state match as well as an Iowa Alliance Conference final at 135 pounds. Ames’ top-ranked Lexa Rozevink faced off against Fort Dodge’s three-time state qualifier and second-ranked Mariaha Benedict.
The two had a tight first period, where Rozevink slipped a takedown attempt from Benedict and recorded her own.
Rozevink then dodged another attempt from Benedict and put her to the mat in 3:27. Benedict bounced back with a victory against Emersyn Zehner of Boone in 55 seconds.
“This is the second time that we’ve seen Rozevink this season,” Koenig said. “They know each other pretty well and we just have to work on something to turn it around.
“We should see her on Tuesday (at the IAC meet).”
In the dual against Boone, Rey Lacina (145) earned a fall in 1:13 for Fort Dodge. Dodger Mariana Taute (130) picked up a pin in 5:11.
Greyson Hinds had a 12-5 decision for her win. Lydia Cowell (100) prevailed by forfeit.
“This was the first time that we had an entire lineup,” Koenig said. “Greyson and Rey got a pair of nice wins. Hopefully this helps motivate the girls as we get ready for the home stretch of the season.”
The Dodgers are back in action on Saturday when they wrestle at the Waukee Northwest Invitational.
