FD’s Potter earns title at Waukee NW

WAUKEE — Freshman Ava Potter has quickly made a splash on the wrestling scene, and on Saturday, the Fort Dodge rookie left her biggest mark yet.

The 11th-ranked (IAwrestle) 235-pounder pulled off her biggest upset of the season, knocking off No. 5 Emma Daniels (30-4) of Carroll in the finals of the Waukee Northwest Invitational.

Potter grabbed the crown with a fall in 4:23. Potter (33-4) also had a pin in 1:41 of the quarterfinals, and pinned Lillian Miller (18-10) of Council Bluffs Abraham Lincoln in 3:10 of the semifinals.

The freshman helped lead the Dodgers to an eighth place finish with 94.5 points.

“I’m super proud of Ava,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “She made a huge run and she dominated the bracket.

“It was kind of a tough route, but she stayed focused.”

Raccoon River-Northwest (248) was the champion. Cedar Falls (195.5) was the runner-up, and Lewis Central placed (133) placed third.

No. 4 senior Mariaha Benedict (34-5) took second for the Dodgers. The Northwestern College commit lost to a familiar opponent in the championship round.

For the third time this season, Benedict faced top-rated Lexa Rozevink (33-1) of Ames. On Saturday, Rozevink recorded a fall in 39 seconds.

Benedict had three pins in matches leading up to the 135-pound finale. Benedict opened with falls in 49 seconds, 3:11 and 3:22.

“It’s kind of the same thing in all of the matches between them so far,” Koenig said. “After the match, the Ames coach and I both talked and we want to see them stop trying to pin each other and go out and use their technique. But that’s what they both like to do.

“Mariaha’s not happy with second place, but she knows there is still room for growth.”

Sophomore Brooklyn Nelson (29-12) placed fourth. Nelson reached the semifinals with a 13-3 major decision and a fall in 57 seconds at 115.

Nelson (115) lost by fall to No. 1 Lauren Whitt (38-3) of Cedar Falls and then fell in the third-place match.

No. 12 freshman Shayley Butrick (34-9) was sixth at 110 pounds. She lost in the quarterfinals before bouncing back with a consolation win.

For the first time in her career, freshman Emma Potter (190) placed in a tournament. Potter had a fall and then earned a medical forfeit in the seventh-place match.

“Brooklyn and Shayley both wrestled really well. Shayley just ran into a buzzsaw,” Koenig said. “Brooklyn should not be upset. She wrestled well.

“This was big for Emma, placing for the first time.”

The Dodgers are back in action on Tuesday at the Iowa Alliance Conference North tournament in Marshalltown.
