Dodgers swimmers earn road sweep

DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge boys swim squad continued to build momentum heading into the home stretch of the season with a road sweep on Thursday.

The Dodgers took care of homestanding Des Moines Hoover, 55-33, and defeated Des Moines North as well, 59-35.

Aiden Seagren and David Nelson both picked up gold medals for Fort Dodge, which also prevailed in the 200 medley relay and 200 freestyle relay.

“The goal in a meet like this is definitely both to win and make sure we’re getting better doing so,” FDSH head coach Ashley Beaumont said. “With the conference meet coming up next week and knowing we’ll go against (the Huskies and Polar Bears again), we wanted to try some different things but also have a successful night (on the scoreboard).”

Seagren won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.61. Nelson captured the 100 backstroke in 1:06.72.

Seagren and Nelson were both on the two victorious relay quartets, joined by Jayden Stanley and Trevor Roberts. The Dodgers took the 200 medley relay (2:01.58) and the 200 freestyle relay (1:42.34).

Nelson was also second to Seagren in the 100 butterfly. Seagren had his best time in the 200 individual medley.

Roberts was a runner-up in the 50 freestyle, as was Stanley in the 100 freestyle. Samuel Brockbank earned second in the 100 breaststroke, and Owen Gruver was a silver medalist in the 100 backstroke.

“The guys continue to show tremendous growth,” Beaumont said. “I’ve been very impressed by the time drops, especially given we haven’t even gotten to that resting period (of the home stretch).”

Chancellor Grimm was a double winner for the Fort Dodge junior varsity team, taking the 50 and 100 freestyle. Jacob Hunter won the 100 JV backstroke for the Dodgers.

Fort Dodge hosts the annual Rusty Garst Invitational on Saturday. The meet begins at 10 a.m., and will include the Dodgers, Bishop Garrigan, Waterloo West, Spencer, Decorah, Carroll, Sioux City West and Atlantic.

Starting at $4.94/week.
