Dodgers pin Riverhawks

MASON CITY — The 15th-ranked (Class 3A) Fort Dodge wrestling team had no trouble taking care of Mason City here Thursday night, winning 10 matches to pick up a 52-14 decision.

Knox Ayala, Mason Zuspann and Rylee Brown each had a fall. Jayce Skow, Jesse Egli and Dreshaun Ross all won by technical fall.

Trace Rial earned a major decision for the Dodgers (7-3 overall), with Damien Yeoman and Amari McCaleb picking up forfeits.

Angel Sandoval added a decision in the rout of the Riverhawks.

“We did a good job of coming out and being aggressive,” FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson said. “We’re getting closer and closer to the postseason, so seeing the kids wrestling with that right scoring mentality is great.”

Ayala needed just 84 seconds to earn his fall at 106 over Ronin McGowan, as Brown earned an even quicker pin at 165 when he stuck Jazzwon Shropshire to the mat in 62 seconds.

Zuspann’s fall at 144 came in 4:42.

Ross earned his technical fall inside of the first period, besting Lincoln Ward by a 20-3 count in 89 seconds. The top-ranked heavyweight has now won 129 consecutive matches as a Dodger and is 138-2 in his career, moving past Erik Birnbaum and into 10th on the school’s all-time wins list.

Ross is now three wins behind older brother Damarion Ross.

Fort Dodge next sets its sights on the Iowa Alliance Conference Tournament in Ottumwa this Saturday.

Starting at $4.94/week.
