Dodgers gear up for stretch run

MASON CITY — The Fort Dodge girls wrestling team had one last chance to prepare for the postseason.

On Saturday, the Dodgers competed in the Upper Iowa Invitational, bringing home an individual championship and a runner-up.

Senior Mariaha Benedict claimed another title, while freshman Ava Potter was a silver medalist to help the Dodgers to 80.5 points and 11th place.

“It’s a really tough tournament to reach the championship match,” said FDSH head coach Jon Koenig. “For Mariaha and Ava, it was great to see them in the finals.

“Mariaha went out and dominated right before postseason. Ava just made a simple mistake, turning the wrong way. This should position Ava in the right direction, as she seems to get fired up after a loss.”

Benedict (40-5) picked up three wins at 135 pounds, and is now the school’s all-time wins leader with 158 victories.

The Northwestern College commit picked up three pins — all in the first period, with the quickest coming in 13 seconds.

Potter (38-5) had two falls to reach the finals. The 11th-ranked freshman lost by fall to No. 7 Mady Lippe (32-7) of Decorah.

Freshman Shayley Butrick (110) and sophomore Brooklyn Nelson (115) both placed fifth. Ninth-graders Emma Potter (190) and Tori Jakeman (170) placed sixth and seventh, respectively.

“We decided to split some things up and put some girls in junior varsity to give them some better matches,” Koenig said. “As a team they should be proud.”

The Dodgers will be back in action on Friday at Spencer for a state qualifying meet.

Starting at $4.94/week.
