The top-ranked (Class 1A) St. Edmond boys quickly bounced back from a loss to Clear Lake last Friday, blasting Eagle Grove, 82-30.

Hunter Horn scored 29 points, Carson Bargfrede added 22 and Jakob Koopman finished with 12, as none of the three saw the court after the third quarter for the Gaels (8-1 overall).

Adrian Whipple paced the Eagles (4-8) with 16 points.

Last Friday, St. Edmond fell to No. 2 (3A) Clear Lake on the road, suffering its first defeat of the year. They would make sure there was no lingering issues from that contest, scoring the first 21 points.

“We wanted to make sure we put that one behind us and moved on,” SEHS head coach Adolph Kochendorfer said. “The kids did a great job coming out and taking care of business right off the bat. We got out and ran a little, played really good defense and rebounded the ball.

“When we are doing those things, we get really good looks on offense.”

Horn had 13 in the first quarter alone, as Bargfrede added eight, including two of his four made 3-pointers. With his performance, Horn now sits at 1,340 career points, inching closer to Nick Clark for second on the career scoring list at 1,437.

In the second, Horn, Bargfrede and Koopman combined for 22 of the 25 points scored by the Gaels, as Ty Mericle sank a triple off the bench for the other three.

Horn finished with five rebounds and two blocked shots, Bargfrede had four rebounds and two steals, and Koopman recorded five steals and four rebounds. Grant Galles added nine points and nine steals.

“This is a very athletic group with a lot of quickness,” Kochendorfer said. “When we get those steals and rebounds, it allows us to really run the floor. And all of them run the court very well and see things develop.”

St. Edmond was able to utilize its bench for much of the second half, as freshman Logan Hanson finished with nine rebounds and four points. Sophomore Thomas Ehn sank a 3-pointer, as well.

“It was great to get those kids some minutes,” Kochendorfer said. “Logan did a fantastic job of rebounding and defending.”

The Gaels remain home and out of North Central Conference play, hosting Manson Northwest Webster this Thursday night. Eagle Grove returns to Top of Iowa Conference action on Tuesday vs. Forest City.
