AMES — Former Algona standout Alex Manske is once again be a targeted recruit.
This time, it will be through the transfer portal.
Manske announced on social media that he will enter the transfer portal next month after one season at Iowa State playing football for Matt Campbell. Manske joins a large group of Cyclones — now over 30 players in all — who have left the program since Campbell announced he was the new head coach at Penn State.
“These past weeks have been crazy and nothing any of us expected,” Manske posted on Twitter. “I’d like to thank God for all of His blessings, including the opportunities that He has given me within the game of football.
“I’d like to thank Coach Campbell and the staff for believing in me and supporting me throughout the journey. I’ll forever be grateful for all you have done for me.”
A four-star recruit after earning four all-state honors as a Bulldog star in Algona, Manske held offers from Texas A&M, Iowa, Kansas State, Nebraska, Pittsburgh and Wisconsin when he committed to Campbell and Iowa State.
During an injury-shortened senior season at Algona, Manske completed 68.5 percent of his passes for 1,456 yards with 18 touchdowns and no interceptions. He also ran for 319 yards and eight more scores, while starting on defense as well.
Manske had 1,787 yards passing and 17 touchdowns at a 61-percent rate with over 700 yards rushing and 12 touchdowns during his junior campaign at AHS. He finished with 4,933 yards passing and 1,414 yards rushing in his high school career, throwing for 49 touchdowns with another 27 TDs on the ground.
This past season, Manske saw action in three games for the Cyclones, meaning he was able to take a redshirt as a true freshman. He completed 4 of 5 passes for 28 yards, while rushing seven times for 33 yards.
“I’d also like to thank Iowa State University, the fans and the community for your support this past year. You guys make Ames a special place to be,” Manske wrote. “To my teammates, I am grateful for all of the friendships we’ve made. I will forever cherish the time we spent together and the many memories we created this year.”
Jack Limbaugh, a former high school teammate of Manske’s at Algona, has announced he will remain at Iowa State after the coaching change from Campbell to Jimmy Rogers.
