No. 5 Fort Dodge back on the mat

DES MOINES — The fifth-ranked Fort Dodge wrestling team will be back on the mat in an Iowa Alliance Conference dual against Des Moines East.

In the first week of action, the Dodgers knocked off Cedar Rapids Prairie in dual action and competing at the Dan Gable Donnybrook.

The Dodgers will face off against East at 5:30 p.m.

“We just want to go out and make gains,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “It will be a different feel from last weekend.

“But this weekend still will be tough.”

While on the mat, the Dodgers will have their thoughts on teammate Brexton Hines. The Dodger sophomore, who was slated to be the starting the 144 pounder, has been in the hospital in Iowa City for over a week.

“Brexton had his appendix burst and his heart stopped,” Thompson said. “His heart is currently running at 34 percent.

“Brexton is a Dodger through and through. He has bought into wrestling and has been working his tail off, going Brody Teske’s camp and working hard. Our thoughts and prayers are with Brextion.”

Top-ranked heavyweight Dreshaun Ross claimed his second Donnybrook title, running through the field with three tech falls and a pin. The Oklahoma State recruit was named the Outstanding wrestler of the meet.

In his three tech falls, Ross outscored his opponents by a 61-14 count.

Ross has now won 109 straight matches, and is 116-2 in his career.

Third-ranked Jesse Egli (190) and No. 3 Knox Ayala (106) both finished fourth for the Dodgers in Coralville.

Senior Rylee Brown (157) now has 94 career victories. Egli has 91.

On Saturday, the Dodgers will compete in the Iowa City West dual tournament. Second-ranked Dowling, No. 6 Waukee Northwest, seventh-rated North Scott, Iowa City Liberty, West Des Moines Valley, Dubuque Hempstead, Waverly-Shell Rock and Pleasant Valley are also in the field.

Fort Dodge will open with North Scott at 9:30 a.m. onSaturday. They’ll also face No. 2 Dowling, Top-10 ranked Dubuque Hempstead and Iowa City Liberty.

“This will be the first time for this tournament having 15 teams in it,” Thompson said. “We’re going to love this. It’s a good opportunity to compete at a high level again.

“Knox will have four ranked opponents, and Dreshaun is (slated to face) the No. 2 heavyweight. It’s good exposure. Our schedule is tough, but it prepares us for the postseason.”
