No. 3 Tritons take down Iowa Western

COUNCIL BLUFFS — The third-ranked Iowa Central wrestling team scored eight bonus points to secure a 25-17 dual victory over No. 12 Iowa Western here Wednesday night.

Tegan Sherk, Che Jenkins, Temuulen Mendbileg, Damarcus Powe, Jarrell Miller and Zaman Anwar were all winners for the Tritons (3-0 overall, 3-0 in ICCAC), who have had a busy past six days.

Last Friday, Iowa Central bested Hawkeye at home in dual action before taking part in the Buena Vista Open in Storm Lake on Saturday.

Sherk, the top-ranked 133-pounder in the country and son of former UFC champion Sean Sherk, got the ball rolling with a 7-2 decision over Isaac Ekdahl. Jenkins followed with a technical fall of Cole Fenwick at 141 pounds, 20-5.

After back-to-back wins by Iowa Western’s Braxton Peacher and Andrew Crowther, Temuulen Mendbileg earned a 23-17 decision vs. Matteo Nikolov, who was ranked seventh at 174 pounds.

Mendbileg had a takedown into a three-point near-fall late in the third to secure the win.

Powe, the fourth-ranked 174-pounder competing at 184 pounds, earned a technical fall in just over two minutes vs. Stephen Sullivan-Diaz, as Miller secured a fall on Cal Wells in 2:26.

Anwar, ranked eighth at heavyweight, finished things off with a tough 7-3 decision vs. No. 10 Jadyn Cooper to cap the night in favor of Iowa Central.

“It was good to have a tough dual here before our break,” ICCC head coach Luke Moffitt said. “It really showed what we need to work on here over the next few weeks to get prepared for the rest of the season.”

The Tritons scored 21 takedowns in the match, winning six of the 10 bouts contested. Mendbileg had five of those takedowns. Jenkins and Powe each recorded four.

Iowa Central is now off until January, when the Tritons head to Miami, Okla. to compete in the NJCAA National Duals tournament.

Starting at $4.94/week.
