The Iowa Central women had second-ranked Kirkwood on the ropes here Wednesday night, but were unable to put the Eagles away.
After a late flurry by Kirkwood forced overtime, the ICCAC leaders put the contest away in the extra session, scoring a 65-59 victory inside Hodges Fieldhouse.
The Tritons (7-3 overall, 2-2 in league) led early and were in control for much of the night before the Eagles (8-0, 4-0) answered. Last year, Kirkwood placed fourth at nationals, and the roster includes several returning sophomores from that group.
Trista Ohlmeier had a double-double, scoring a team-high 18 points while grabbing 16 rebounds in 41 minutes. Amelia Echternkamp added 14 points for Iowa Central, and Ashlin Jacobsen finished with 12.
For Kirkwood, Olivia Wren scored 18 points both Bra’Ja Torry and Molly Roling each had 10. Wren had her 14 over the two-plus quarters.
The Tritons had an eight-point lead with less than four minutes to play, but the Eagles rallied behind Wren.
“I’m super proud of this group for the way they battled and believed in each other,” ICCC head coach Graham McFall said. “They competed for 40 minutes and our preparation paid off.
“We are still excited and hungry to get better.”
Kirkwood went to Wren late and the sophomore delivered, including a game-tying triple that she banked in with just under eight seconds to go. Wren also hit another triple to make it a two-point contest with under 30 seconds to go.
Kaydence Nicholas, who sank several free throws down the stretch, had eight points with seven rebounds for the Tritons. Jacobsen chipped in three steals.
The Eagles, who overcame 11 missed free throws and a 20-percent night shooting from the 3-point line, received 22 points from their bench and held a plus-six advantage on points in the paint.
Former Iowa Central standout Brittany West is an assistant coach at Kirkwood. West was an All-American for the Tritons.
Next action for Iowa Central will be on Saturday in Creston against Southwestern at 1 p.m.
