The first official IHSAA boys basketball rankings for the 2025-26 season have been released, with St. Edmond sitting first in Class 1A.
Fresh off a win this past Saturday over defending 1A state champion Madrid, the Gaels head into the Christmas break with a perfect 5-0 record. They are immediately ahead of Wapsie Valley, MMCRU, Notre Dame Burlington and Boyden-Hull atop the 1A rankings.
Bishop Garrigan is seventh in 1A with a 5-1 overall record.
The other No. 1-rated squads include Waukee Northwest (4A), Ballard (3A) and Unity Christian (2A).
Clear Lake is third from the North Central Conference in 3A. The Lions will take on St. Edmond twice after the break.
The Gaels are averaging just over 70 points per game, winning their five games to date by an average of over 23 points. Senior Hunter Horn is averaging a team-high 28 points on 54 percent shooting from the field.
Carson Bargfrede is at over 13 points a game, while Jakob Koopman adds 9.4 points, 10.4 rebounds, 3.6 steals and nearly three assists. Jack McElroy is posting 8.2 assists per game and Grant Galles is at eight points with two steals per night.
St. Edmond heads to Humboldt on Jan. 6 for its next action, followed by a trip to Jewell to play South Hamilton. The first of two scheduled dates with Clear Lake is slated for Jan. 9, with the return contest inside the Gael gym on Feb. 6.
Bishop Garrigan will host the Gaels on Jan. 19 in a rescheduled game from earlier this year. The Golden Bears have won four in a row since a loss to No. 5 (2A) Hull Western Christian, 67-63.
Michael Joyce averages a team-leading 18 points per game for Garrigan. Amaury Thomas is averaging a double-double at 16.8 points and 11 rebounds.
