CORALVILLE — Dreshaun Ross has already left a lasting impression on the high school wrestling scene, and in his first weekend of his senior season, the Fort Dodge star finished with an iconic photo shoot.

For the second time in his career, Ross walked away from Xtreme Arena with a prestigious Dan Gable Donnybrook championship.

After the tournament, Ross was named Outstanding Wrestler of the event. He had his picture taken with legendary coach and wrestler Dan Gable.

“Dreshaun is much more than what he is on the mat,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “He is a huge leader in the room and away from it as well. On our out-of-town trips, he organizes breakfast and gets stuff going. He takes the guys to weigh-ins.

“He’s like another coach in there.”

The future Oklahoma State Cowboy walked through the 285-pound bracket with three technical falls and pin.

The Dodgers finished 12th in the team standings with 219.5 points.

“I think the goal for Dreshaun is to get as much competition as possible,” Thompson said. “He’s trying to work on conditioning and pick up some more mat time.”

Seventh-ranked senior Jesse Egli (190 pounds) and freshman Knox Ayala (106) both place fourth for Fort Dodge after reaching the semifinals.

Eighth-ranked junior Trace Rial (120) placed seventh, while No. 6 sophomore Damien Yeoman (113) was eighth for the Dodgers.

No. 10 senior Rylee Brown (157) took 10th. Freshman Mykel Benedict (175) and sophomore Cael Adams (215) were 22nd and 23rd, respectively.

In his three tech fall matches, Ross outscored his opponents 61-19. The Oklahoma State University recruit’s first match of the tournament was a fall in 37 seconds.

Ross (5-0) ups his career mark to 116-2. He has won 109 consecutive high school matches.

In the finals, Ross dominated Waukee’s sixth-ranked Anfew Hine (5-1) by a 21-5 technical fall count in 2:57.

“Dreshaun is a Dodger through and through,” Thompson said. “He could be in Stillwater right now working, but he wants to be here for his teammates and Fort Dodge.”

Both Ayala (4-2) and Egli (3-3) had tough opponents in the final two matches. Ayala lost to nationally-ranked AJ Woerpel of Hortonville by fall, then in a tight 1-0 decision to Sebastian Gracia of Mount Carmel for third.

“Knox was in a tough weight class,” Thompson said. “He has to go back and work on some things, but for a freshman, this was a good start.”

Egli suffered a 17-1 loss to nationally-ranked JT Smith of Creighton Prep in the semis, then fell 19-3 to Joseph Heim of Shakopee in the third-place match.

“The kid that beat Jesse for third is a bad (really good) dude,” Thompson said. “Jesse had a great tournament overall, and has gotten fourth here two years in a row.”

Rial (4-2) won by medical forfeit for seventh place. Yeoman (3-3) lost a tough 8-7 in the consolation round, then fell 18-7 in the seventh-place match.

Brown (4-2) won three matches and now has 94 career wins.

“Trace and Damien battled hard,” Thompson said. “Our guys took some lumps in a tough tourney, but guys like Caiden (Fraher), Cael and Mykel had steep hills to climb.

“Now we have to go back to the shop and work on some things. They fought hard and we have to make some adjustments, but it’s the first week of December.”

The Dodgers are back in action on Thursday when they head to Des Moines East for a dual.

Starting at $4.94/week.
