FD’s Bennedict back in Donnybrook finals

CORALVILLE — Fort Dodge senior Mariaha Benedict is in contention for her second straight Dan Gable Donnybrook championship.

Benedict (17-0) pinned all three of her opponents in the first period on Friday to roll into the championship round.

Lydia Cowell (100), Shayley Butrick (110), Brooklyn Nelson (115), Adalyn Ford (125), Mariana Taute (130), Tori Jakeman (170), Emma Potter (170) and Ava Potter (235) all won their opening-round matches for the Dodgers. Taute prevailed in her first two matches and also had a victory on the backside.

“The girls on the back side are still wrestling for places and team points,” FDSH head coach Jon Koenig said. “We talked about not worrying too much about a loss and moving on.

“Obviously some didn’t achieve what they came to do, but facing tough competition is what gets you better.”

In the opening round, Benedict — ranked second (IAwrestle) — earned a fall in 1:08, followed by a pin in 36 seconds and advanced to the finals with a win 1:38.

It will be a familiar opponent for Benedict in the finals, as she’ll face Brielle Parke of Linn-Mar, a teammate in club wrestling. The two met in the AAU finals last March, with Parke picking up an 8-7 victory.

“Mariaha has definitely had some tough matches,” Koenig said. “Her mission is to repeat as Donnybrook champion.”

Freshmen Butrick (16-1) and Ava Potter (15-1) suffered their first losses of their career. They both bounced back with consolation victories.

Nelson, Butrick, Taute and Ava Potter can now place as high as ninth.

The Dodgers are currently sitting in 22nd place with 123 points. Raccoon River Northwest is the team leader with 338 points.

“We have the hardest schedule in the state of Iowa and that’s what we want,” Koenig said. “We just have to shake off losses that can have a snowball effect.”

The Dodgers will be back in action on Saturday morning here at 8:30 a.m.

Starting at $4.94/week.
