Dodgers earn road win
SPENCER — The Fort Dodge boys basketball team made amends for a road bump earlier in the week by posting a 46-39 victory at Spencer on Friday.
Senior Hayden Zuspann drilled six three-point baskets and scored 20 points for the Dodgers (1-2 overall), who earned their first win of the season three nights after letting one slip through their hands in an overtime loss at Boone.
“I’m just so proud of our guys for finishing,” FDSH head coach Willie Williams said. “We left the door open just enough (against the Toreadors on Tuesday) and it burned us. We learned from that and got better.
“It’s hard to win — especially on the road. You can’t take any detail for granted. We kept after it and stayed together. We’d obviously rather be sitting at 2-1 right now, but we fought through the adversity and got the job done.”
Senior Taevon Feeley added 14 points and classmate Tytrell Mosley contributed nine for the Dodgers, who used a 15-6 second-quarter advantage to take a commanding 24-11 halftime lead.
The Tigers (0-3), who had dropped games to traditional powers Sioux City East (59-53) and Hull Western Christian (72-29) to open the year, had crept within 33-21 in the final minute of the third period when Zuspann drained consecutive three-point baskets to push Fort Dodge ahead by 18 points.
Spencer did out-score the Dodgers 18-7 in the final frame, using an 8-0 run to open the fourth and pull within 10. Fort Dodge kept its distance from there, though.
The Dodgers were without leading scorer Reggie Pederson for the final three quarters. Pederson rolled his ankle early with FDSH ahead 8-2.
“He’ll probably be out for at least a week, but hopefully no more than that,” Williams said of the sophomore. “Our kids really responded and rallied around each other and wanted to get this one for Reggie. They could’ve hung their heads, but they showed resilience. Hayden, Taevon and Tytrell all had good games. They stepped up and played like seniors. We got good minutes off the bench from (seniors) Kauner (Jensen) and Karter (Hemrick), (as well as junior Dterrius) Teddy (Johnson). It’s not always about scoring and shooting. We had guys make the most of their opportunities and embrace their roles.
“I also want to thank our JV1 and 2 kids. They made a real difference in the stands with their energy.”
Foster Roos had a game-high 22 points for the Tigers, but no other player had more than four.
Fort Dodge hosts Humboldt on Monday, followed by a road trip to Des Moines Lincoln on Tuesday.
