Ross earns first period tech in win over No. 2 Hagan
IOWA CITY — It was a different feel, but a good experience for the Fort Dodge wrestling team on Saturday at the Iowa City Duals.
The No. 5 Dodgers (2-3 overall) beat Iowa City Liberty, 53-28.
Fort Dodge lost to second-ranked Dowling (49-23), ninth-rated Dubuque Hempstead (44-30) and No. 7 North Scott (37-30).
“There were some tough teams, but we need to get tougher,” said FDSH head coach Bobby Thompson. “We lost a lot of matches due to lack of fighting.”
In their win over Liberty, the Dodgers won nine times — five by pin, one tech fall and three forfeits.
“I like this tournament. It’s a pretty relaxing format,” Thompson said. “Wrestle four duals, starting at 10 a.m., have a break on the road while it’s still daylight.
“Iowa City West did a great job putting on a tough tournament.”
Picking up falls for the Dodgers were were Amari McCaleb (150), No. 10 (IAwrestle) Rylee Brown (157), Caiden Fraher (165), third-ranked Jesse Egli (190) and top-ranked Dreshaun Ross (235).
Ross and Egli had dominating days, going 4-0. Both Egli and Ross had three falls each and each had a tech fall.
Third-ranked Knox Ayala (106) had three wins (fall, tech and forfeit), No. 7 Trace Rial (120) also picked up three wins by tech fall and a decision.
Brown rolled in his three wins with two falls and a decision for his three wins.
Picking up two wins were fifth-ranked Damien Yeoman (113), Fraher (165) and McCaleb (150).
Sam Davidson (126), Mykel Benedict (175) and Hunter Kasperbauer (132) picked up one win each.
There were a number of ranked matchups in the tournament, but the most intriguing was Ross against second-ranked Brady Hagan of West Des Moines Dowling.
Ross just went to another level, picking up the win in the first period with a tech fall. Ross outscored Hagan 21-6 in 1:53.
The Oklahoma State recruit has now won 113 consecutive high school matches, and is 120-2 in his career.
Ross moves into a tie with 2005 graduate Christian Abrams (120-26) for 18th on the school’s all-time win list.
“Dreshaun was just dominant,” Thompson said. “He rolled through the No. 2 kid in the state.
“He was impressive in his attacks.”
Both Brown (97-66) and Egli (95-64) will look to pick up their 100th career victories when the Dodgers host the Don Miller Invitational on Saturday.
“Jesse had an outstanding tournament,” Thompson said. “He is gaining a lot of confidence and we’ve seen big growth.
“Knox, Trace and Rylee had good days as well, picking up three wins each.”
Fort Dodge is back in action on Thursday when they travel to Des Moines to face Lincoln and Roosevelt.
