Busy week ahead for Gael squads
The St. Edmond basketball teams are hoping for a week as scheduled before taking an extended break for the holiday season.
The Gaels host Algona here Tuesday for a girl/boy doubleheader beginning at 6 p.m. followed by another North Central Conference twinbill on Friday at Hampton-Dumont/CAL.
For the St. Edmond boys, they are set to play a third game, taking on defending Class 1A state champion Madrid in the Hardwood Classic at Iowa Central.
Last week, the Gael girls (2-1 overall, 2-0 in league) earned a second conference win, besting Iowa Falls-Alden, 58-31. Freshman Eden Horn had 20 points with 20 rebounds and five blocked shots, as Chloe Palmer added 16 points and six assists.
Horn is averaging 18 points and 17.5 rebounds a game followed by Palmer at 11 points and Abby Huss at seven.
The 15th-ranked (Class 3A) Bulldogs (3-2, 1-1) are paced by Hayden McLaughlin, who is posting 21 points per game. Kate Limbaugh, a freshman, averages 11.6 and Bella Jo Dunning just over 10.
Algona dropped a 46-42 decision to Clear Lake last week and downed Iowa Falls-Alden earlier this season, 67-23.
Hampton-Dumont/CAL (2-3, 1-1) owns an NCC win over Webster City and fell to Clear Lake. MacKenzy Valley is the leading scorer at nine points per game.
After opening with a convincing 81-54 victory over Clarion-Goldfield/Dows earlier this month, the Gael boys (2-0, 2-0) stomped Iowa Falls-Alden last Friday in their home opener, 85-46.
Hunter Horn continues to climb the school’s career scoring charts, as he is averaging 30.5 points per game with 10 rebounds and three assists. The senior ranks fifth with 1,167 career points, just four back of Andy Nagel.
Classmate Carson Bargfrede is posting 19 points per game while Jakob Koopman averages 10.5 and 8.5 rebounds. A fourth senior, Jack McElroy is averaging 9.5 assists a night.
For the Bulldogs (2-0, 0-0), Nathan Manske is the leading scorer at 20 points, adding 7.5 rebounds and 2.5 assists. Landon Campe adds 14.5 and Jacob Burns 8.5.
Hampton-Dumont/CAL (2-1, 1-0) earned a 47-46 victory over Webster City last week. Brady Harr, an Iowa State football commit, leads with 17.3 points and over 11 rebounds and four assists.
Madrid (5-1) lost several key starters from a year ago when they knocked St. Edmond out of state in the semifinals. Jevyn Severson, a highly-ranked football prospect, leads at 23 points per game with nearly 10 rebounds, as Emerson Bridgewater adds 15 and nine.
