Thrilling road win for No. 10 Tritons

GARDEN CITY, Kan. — The 10th-ranked Iowa Central football team secured a key road win here Saturday over No. 11 Garden City, prevailing by a 23-17 final in overtime.

Ethan Johnson ran in a five-yard score on third-and-goal in the extra session to win it after the Broncbusters missed a field goal on their possession in overtime.

Damarcus Creecy had a big game for the Tritons (7-3 overall), throwing for 128 yards and two touchdowns while adding a game-high 73 yards rushing on 19 carries. Sejhe Jackson and Denver Longden both caught TD passes from Creecy, who completed 14 of 22 on the day.

Jackson, Marcellus Chandler and Jacob Kania each caught three passes, with Jackson finishing with 49 yards.

“Our guys fought and battled all game long,” ICCC head coach Jesse Montalto said. “We made some big plays when we really needed to on both offense and defense, keeping drives alive and keeping the ball from Garden City.”

Dae’Onte Mitchell had 93 yards passing and Cenard Bennett 71 yards receiving on six catches to lead Garden City, who tied the game on a 2-yard touchdown run by Ahmir Smith with 26 seconds left after the Tritons were hit with a pass interference penalty on the drive.

Longden had his touchdown catch early in the second to tie it at 7-all, and Creecy and Jackson connected with 12 seconds left before half to give Iowa Central a 14-7 lead. Both scoring drives were extended ones for Iowa Central.

The first came after 13 plays and 65 yards while the second resulted in the Tritons covering 99 yards over 12 plays.

Anderson Trejo knocked in a 19-yard field goal late in the third. The field goal capped off a 16-play, 55-yard drive.

“This was a really big win for our guys,” Montalto said. “It’s a tough place to play and we were able to come out on top.”

Christian Barney had 14 tackles on defense for the Tritons, as Ahmad Grayer had eight. Both Mason Chandler and Taylor Schaefer each had seven tackles, with Schaefer breaking up two passes.
