Nauman blazes to title

Friday presented one final opportunity for Quentin Nauman to impress.

And the Western Dubuque senior did not disappoint.

Nauman, who has already committed to run for the University of Oregon, set the fastest state cross country championship time ever at Lakeside Golf Course and Kennedy Park, winning the Class 3A title in 14:48.3.

At the state track and field championships earlier this year, he swept the distance races and won a relay title, continuing that success on the national scene with more race victories.

Pella’s Canaan Dunham was second and Caleb Ten Pas from Des Moines Christian placed third, as Gilbert’s Logan Bleich, Jacob Tallman and Carson Squiers were directly behind.

The same six all finished in the Top-6 last year, as the Tigers repeated as team champions over Mount Vernon-Lisbon and Pella.

In the girls race, Marissa Ferebee of Pella claimed her third state title in 17:47, helping the Dutch finish off a four-peat as state champions. Teammate Elsie Brenneman was fourth, as Pella scored just 31 points.

Izzy Hardin of Maquoketa was the runner-up and Evelyn Moeller from Mount Vernon-Lisbon placed third.

Another repeat champion came out of 2A, as Grundy Center’s Emerson Vokes won his second straight title. Vokes posted a winning time of 15:42, with Jesse Gomez of Denver second and Lucas Anderson from Chariton placing third.

Vokes is the only Grundy Center runner to win a state cross country crown.

Chariton, the No. 1 ranked team coming in, retained that position by scoring 42 points to finish ahead of Forest City and Oelwein.

Albia’s McKenna Montgomery won gold in the 2A girls race, clocking a time of 18:20. Marcy Grace Lyons from Monticello, a freshman, was third, followed by Katie Young of Unity Christian.

Montgomery became the first winner from Albia with her performance.

The team title went to Treynor with 121 points, as Waukon was second and Unity Christian third. All three were within 17 points of one another.

State cross country concludes on Saturday with the 1A and 4A races in both girls and boys.

Starting at $4.94/week.
