Cowboys can’t stop champion Spartans
GRUNDY CENTER — For the second time this season, the Clarion-Goldfield/Dows football team saw first-hand just how impressive Grundy Center can be.
The three-time defending state champion Spartans picked up a 42-7 victory here Friday night to advance to the Class 1A quarterfinals.
For the Cowboys, they end the season 6-4 after securing their first playoff win since 2011 a week ago.
Kolton Hefti for Clarion-Goldfield/Dows on the board when he broke free for a 62-yard run midway through the second quarter, cutting the deficit to 14-7.
Judd Jirovsky, who has been a key figure in many of the 49 consecutive wins by Grundy Center, had four first half touchdowns, including a 72-yard run that answered the first Clarion-Goldfield/Dows touchdown.
The win streak is tied for the third-longest in Iowa high school football history with Harlan.
A 32-yard interception return by Jirovsky, who has committed to play golf at Stanford University, made it 35-7 at the break.
The Cowboys will graduate key seniors Hefti, leading rusher Selvin Gonzalez, Joel Meier, Ryan Hartwig, Henry Holmes and Dawson Beyer.
Clarion-Goldfield/Dows had just it second winning season in the last 11 years.
