Bears inching closer to the dome
ALGONA — Top-ranked Bishop Garrigan dominated in all areas of the game here Friday, earning a third consecutive trip to the eight-player quarterfinals with a 50-15 victory over North Union here Friday night at Conway Field.
The Golden Bears (10-0 overall) will now face Don Bosco (7-2) on Thursday in the quarterfinals back here. The Dons knocked off Clarksville last night.
CJ McGregor had three rushing touchdowns, as both Ethan Marso and Tate Foertsch ran in a pair. Marso ran 23 times for 165 yards, Foertsch had 10 for 106 and McGregor ran for 93 on 13 attempts as part of a 362-yard night on the ground behind offensive linemen Carter Schwab, Kayden Graves and Nate Leerar.
Foertsch also picked off his state-leading ninth interception during a first half that saw Bishop Garrigan take a commanding 30-7 lead.
Marso had a pair of sacks on defense for the Golden Bears.
Bishop Garrigan, who won the state title in 2023, has gone 33-2 over the last three years. That is the most wins in a three-year span for the program in the Bound-era, which dates back to 2006.
North Union (5-4), who knocked off ranked GTRA in the opening round to advance, moved down from 11-player to eight-player prior to the start of this season. They got on the board in the first half when junior Greyson Colegrove found classmate Cooper Hoye for his 11th passing TD of the year.
The Warriors will graduate leading rusher Draven Keeler, who surpassed 1,000 yards this past year along with top receiver Khael Jones, Drew Henderson, Cole Nicoson and a handful of others.
North Union added a late touchdown when the reserves came in with just seconds left in the fourth.
