St. Edmond still in prime spot to clinch 8-player postseason grid bid

The St. Edmond football team gets another crack at securing a postseason bid for a second straight season here Friday night inside Dodger Stadium.
The Gaels host Harris-Lake Park for Senior Night beginning at 7 p.m.
Prior to kickoff, St. Edmond (3-3 overall, 3-1 in the district) will honor 12th-graders Grant Galles, Jakob Koopman, Ethan Swisher, Kinnick Henning, Koleman Hanson and Max Webster.
With a win over the Wolves (2-4, 1-3), the Gaels will clinch one of three automatic qualifying spots from the district for the playoffs. St. Edmond concludes the regular season at co-district leader eighth-ranked Kingsley-Pierson (6-1, 4-0) next week.
Kingsley-Pierson and No. 7 GTRA (6-0, 4-0), which topped the Gaels last week by a final of 66-44, meet Friday night.
The six seniors have been integral pieces to the resurgence of the SEHS program, ending a three-year playoff drought by going 5-4 in 2024 to qualify. They have won 16 games over the past four years, finishing at .500 or better each season.
“It’s been a lot of fun getting to coach this group of seniors,” SEHS head coach Matt Dillon said. “They’ve been key pieces to the success we have had as a program over these past few years.
“They are tremendous role models and exceptional student-athletes.”
Behind a 24-point second quarter vs. GTRA, the Gaels put a scare into the Titans. They led 32-28 at the half, but played the final 24 minutes without Swisher due to an injury. He threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns before departing.
Koopman caught 11 passes for 118 yards and a TD, while Henning ran for 48 yards and scored twice. Galles had eight receptions for 68 yards and relieved Swisher at quarterback.
Junior Aaron Hindt surpassed 1,000 yards rushing in his career, as he had 167 total yards with three total touchdowns. Hindt has 1,020 yards on the ground with 18 scores on the ground.
The Wolves had a bye last week after receiving a forfeit from Siouxland Christian. They lost four in a row prior to that, includng a 43-18 setback at the hands of Remsen St. Mary’s.
Sophomore Beckett Rahe has thrown for 229 yards, while senior Adam Bensley leads the squad in rushing yards (255) and receiving yards (139) with four TDs scored.
“We know that we need to come out and play well right from the start,” Dillon said. “We have to control the game and we do that by being able to run the football and stop the run.”
St. Edmond and Harris-Lake Park have met twice previously, with the Wolves winning both games. Harris-Lake Park secured a 63-34 victory in 2022 and won 42-28 the season before.
