Rial, Underberg earn league honors

DES MOINES — The Fort Dodge boys competed in the Iowa Alliance Tournament at Blank Golf Course on Tuesday.

The Dodgers placed sixth in the 10-team field, shooting a 334. Ottumwa (316) was the champion, followed by Marshalltown (320), Des Moines Roosevelt (321), Mason City (328) and Ames (333).

Fort Dodge junior Trace Rial (81) took 10th in the 60-player field based on the tiebreaking scores. Junior Davis Underberg also carded an 81 and was 12th. As a result, both earned all-conference honors.

“I’m really proud of our guys,” FDSH head coach Nick Vinson said. “It was a great day overall, but also, a frustrating day to a certain extent. So many of them were closer to being four, five, six strokes better.

“With that being said, we can’t complain much. Trace really wanted to break 80 and had a putt on the last hole for a 79. Davis birided the last two holes to (secure a medal for the second consecutive year) and was two-under par the last six. They both did a really nice job and this is something to build from.”

Senior Jaxson Dencklau (85), senior Gavin Davis (87), junior Mason Frevert (87) and sophomore Caleb Huse (101) rounded out the FDSH scorecard.

“Jaxson missed probably six putts inside five feet, and had to (battle back) from a quad(ruple bogey),” Vinson said. “But he’s much closer. Mason was disappointed in himself, but it was just one of those days. He’ll bounce back.

“Gavin being at 87 was a positive, and this was Caleb’s first varsity meet and first (competitive) 18-hole round (at FDSH). He was 12 over through 10, but it’s a big ask to (stay consistent) through the full 18. Bottom line is we weren’t too far away from that upper echelon. Hopefully we keep building the momentum and potentially get into the 320s (as a team at districts).”

Joe Greazel of Marshalltown was the individual medalist. Ottumwa’s Stephen Brinegar (75) was the runner-up.

Mason City’s Michael Solberg (76), Ottumwa’s Tate Harness (77) and Des Moines Roosevelt’s Ira Daines (77) rounded out the Top-5.

The Dodgers are back in action on Monday when they host a Class 4A district meet at the Country Club. The meet starts at 10 a.m.

Starting at $4.94/week.
