Now or never for area teams targeting playoffs
For Class 2A on down, Friday is the final chance to earn a slot in Iowa’s high school football postseason race.
Manson Northwest Webster (5-2, 4-0) has clinched a district championship, and Emmetsburg (5-2, 3-1) is also in. The two remaining spots in District 2 will come down to a race between South Central Calhoun (3-4, 2-2), East Sac County (3-4, 2-2) and Pocahontas Area (2-5, 1-3).
Clarion-Goldfield-Dows (4-3, 2-2) and North Union (3-3, 2-2) are in with wins tonight, while Southeast Valley (3-4, 1-3) still has an outside chance.
Humboldt (4-3, 2-1) has two tough tasks ahead, with No. 4 Sioux City Heelan (6-1, 3-0) this week and fifth-ranked Sioux Center (6-1, 2-1) next Friday to close things out. The Wildcats must win both.
Heelan is in the driver’s seat. The Wildcats and Sioux Center both have two district wins to date
Class 3A will finish their regular season next week, as 2A and smaller begin their postseason quest.
Bishop Heelan (6-1, 3-0) at Humboldt (4-3, 2-1)
Nothing is certain yet in Class 3A, District 1, other than tough head-to-head competitions are coming up in the final two weeks.
The Crusaders’ only loss on the season is a one-point defeat to ranked Class 5A squad Sioux City East. The Wildcats have posted two straight victories, keeping MOC-Floyd Valley at bay last week in 21-7 victory as Jackson Flaherty ran for two touchdowns and Cash McIntire had one.
Heelan quarterback Noah Conley threw for 129 yards and two TDs in the Crusaders’ 28-7 win over Webster City. Avery Favors and Kasen Thomas had rushing scores, while Grant Whitcomb and Caden Lester caught touchdown passes.
Conley is nearing the 1,000-yard passing mark at 838 in 2025 with seven touchdowns. Thomas has been a menace on the ground, toting the ball 128 times for 825 and 16 TDs.
Lester is the lead receiver, hauling in 23 balls for three scores. Whitcomb and Jonathon Hope have two scores each.
Flaherty has thrown for 1,047 yards and 11 TDs, and the Wildcats have rushed for 993 yards. McIntire has been the workhorse with 99 carries for 622 and nine scores. Flaherty has the other five Wildcat rushing touchdowns.
Flaherty’s twin brother, Chase Flaherty, has pulled in 28 balls for 504 and five touchdowns. Valley Davis has three scores and Jaxson Kirchhoff has two.
Chase has three interceptions to date.
South Central Calhoun (3-4, 2-2) at Pocahontas Area (2-5, 1-3);
East Sac County (3-4, 2-2) at Emmetsburg (5-2, 3-1)
Things could get interesting in Class 1A, District 2 with a Pocahontas Area victory. Manson Northwest Webster has clinched the district championship, and Emmetsburg would officially be the runner-up with a victory over the Raiders.
If the Indians win, there will be a three-way tie. The Raiders have beaten the Indians, but the Titans toppled East Sac County.
With a three-way tie, the two playoff qualifiers will be decided on by the ranking committee. If the rankings are the same, then it will come alphabetically.
If South Central Calhoun prevails, both the Raiders and Titans will advance.
The Titans are coming off a 31-14 loss to the Cougars last Friday, while the Indians were edged by East Sac County (30-28).
SCC has had a balanced offensive attack, throwing for 929 yards and running for 1,138. Quarterback Cade Higgins has 911 yards and four TD passes.
On the ground, both Cooper Nattress (324) and Luke Patterson (328) have gone over the 300-mark. Nattress has 10 touchdowns and Patterson has three.
SCC’s Coltley Timmerman has three scores, while Higgins has two.
Charlie Nattress has pulled in 24 balls for 305 yards and one score. Hayden Stickrod has two touchdown catches.

Karson Welander has two touchdown catches for PAC. Coen Hammen, Christian Valenzuela and Welander have two TD catches each.
On defense, the Titans have eight takeaways, while the Indians have 11 (seven interceptions, including one for a score).
Southeast Valley (3-4, 1-3) at OABCIG (4-3, 2-2)
With a win, Southeast Valley will likely force a three-way tie in Class 2A, District 2.
No. 1 Kuemper and No. 3 Okoboji will meet for the district championship. The Falcons have two league wins, while the Jaguars and Spirit Lake have one each.
With a victory and and a Spirit Lake win over winless Estherville-Lincoln Central, the final two spots will be knotted between the three squads.
The Jaguars lost 56-27 to the Indians last Friday. Both Mason Bahr and Casey Hanson threw touchdown passes and ran for one. Bryce Harrison and Colin Johnson had TD grabs.
The dual-quarterback method has been working for SV, as Bahr has thrown for 628 yards and 10 scores and Hanson has 493 and eight TDs.
Both Logan Jaeschke (485 yards) and Bryce Harrison (423) have been the main targets. Jaeschke has eight touchdowns, while Harrison has five and Johnson has four.
On the ground, Hanson has ran for 562 yards and nine TDs. Bahr has hit paydirt three times.
The Jaguar defense has 10 takeaways.
Raif Jensen has 963 yards and six touchdowns to pace OABCIG. Jensen has eight rushing TDs as well, while Kade Spotts has six.
Jax DeJean (26 catches) and JJ Parks (25) are the main targets for Jensen. DeJean has three interceptions.
Clarion-Goldfield/Dows (4-3 2-2) at Garner-Hayfield/Ventura (0-7, 0-4)
For the Cowboys, it’s simple: win and they’re in.
Even with a loss, though, C-G/D will likely advance. If they fall and Central Springs loses to South Hardin — combined with an upset win for Eagle Grove over Grundy Center — it would be a three-way tie.
It was a tough week for the Cowboys last Friday in a 29-0 defeat versus South Hardin. The Cardinals fell to Eagle Grove (50-21) — their seventh straight loss of the season.
C-G/D has rushed for 1,738 yards. Both Selvin Gonzalez (682 yards) and Joel Meier (667) have been the groundhogs, as Gonzalez has carried 118 times and Meier, 95.
Gonzalez has six end zone trips, while Meier has 10. Colin Sesker has three touchdowns.
Defensively, Huxley Lingenfelter leads the team with 56.5 tackles. Meier has 7.5 sacks and 12.5 tackles for loss.
As a squad, the Cowboys have 19 takeaways, 11 fumble recoveries and eight interceptions. Meier and Cooper Nosbush have three fumble recoviers each.
Henry Holmes and Paxton Lingenfelter have two interceptions each.
The Cardinals are led by Parker Stearns (499 yards rushing), who has three scores.
Northwood-Kensett (4-3, 1-3) at North Union (3-3, 2-2)
In their first season of eight-player football, North Union still has a shot at the playoffs. With a win over the Vikings, the Warriors would be in.
North Union knocked off West Bend-Mallard 48-12 last week, while Northwood-Kensett fell to top-ranked Bishop Garrigan (61-13).
For the Warriors in Week 7, Greyson Colegrove threw for 216 yards and two scores, while Draven Keeler had 241 yards on the ground and five touchdowns. Drew Henderson and Cooper Hoye caught TD passes.

The Warriors have 11 takeaways.
